I`ve just gone natural. I grew out the relaxer over 10 months by wearing braids. I took a deep breath and removedt my braids last night. My new natural hair is about 4-5 inches long. I washed it with Creme of Nature. Conditioned with ORS Mayo and sat under drier for 15 mins and then applied ORS tea-tree leave in conditioner and ORS shea butter. I then twisted my hair and let it dry naturally. This morning my hair is dry as a bone and has shrunk by about 50%. My hair has soaked up all the products including the shea butter. Can any one recommend a good product for dry, dense porous natural hair like mine before I run out and buy a wig or worse still run to hairdressers and get my hair relaxed.

I`d appreciate your suggestions.

We have similar stories as I have done the same for the same amount of time.

My first question is how long is your hair now? perm and new growth? The first thing that you may want to do is to clip your ends or have someone do them for you. In addition it is very important at this stage that you maintain as much mositure as you can for your hair.

My system is that I try to stay away from any products that are greasy or waxy. Look at the ingredients. If it says parrafin or wax, realize that it will have a very heavy effect on your hair. Also look ant product ingredients that may say alcohol or cetyl alcohol. Any alcohol will cut oil and dry the hair very quickly. The closer the ingredients are listed at the top, the more that product has in it.
I like to wash my hair with motions moisturizing shampoo and I also use their moisturizing conditioner. I rarely use a blow drier. While my hair is damp, I will seperate or detangle it with my fingers then apply lustersilk texturizing gel for natural hair. Braid it in as many as 4 braids and then put on a nice silky or satin scarf.( cotton sucks out moisture which is why pillowcases of cotton are bad)

If I am not out in public, my hair is always well moisturized and covered in a scarf. The air dries out my hair very easily, especially the dry heat of my house in the fall and winter months.

On a daily basis I will usually use a pre-con gel, wet and wavy spray and gel, or either a pink oil. The bottom line is to keep the hair moist. My hair is shoulder length so I have experimented with french twist, french braids, chignons/buns and the like. Hope this helps some:)

My hair is about 5 inches long. I cut out the relaxer a couple of months ago, although I think there is still some at the ends. I will chop this off or maybe go to a salon and get this done. I`ll check out the ingredients in my products and get back to you.

Thanks for your hair care tips. I`ll give it a go.

I know what you are going through. My hair is doing the same thing your hair is doing. It shrinks down to a nappy afro dry as a bone. I have started using Shea Butter and I`m trying to be careful about what I`m using on my hair. I put a leave in conditioner in my hair and because it had water in it my hair instantly shrunk up. So I have several wigs hair that I Will wear untill I can get this hair together. Don`t get me wrong I`m glad that I` have went natural but everybodies hair is not the same are hair patterns are all different. Where some of us go natural and have no problem and can use any product we all cannot do this. So all I`m looking for is soft managable fro that is 4to5 inches in length instead of 1inch in length and dry and nappy.

Hi all,

I understand. I have been fully natural one year as of last week. My hair is 4 something super kinky curly tight hair. I am still learning. I hope this helps.

Very Important--Understand natural hair may react different from relaxed hair. Curls do not produce as much shine as straight hair b/c less reflection. The relaxed hair hid some of the dryness due to chemicals and constant frying. Moisture is key.

1. The key to moist hair is keeping it moist. I found twisting my hair locks in moinsture longer.

2. Do a hot oil treatment before or after shampooing. Preferably a natural oil like shea butter, jojoba oil or coconut oil. You can use a hooded hair dryer or put on a shower cap or grocery bag and let your body heat do the work. Overnight shows the best results.

3. Use more natural products and read the ingredients on products. Read some of your bottles and do a search on the ingredients you don`s know. Aubrey Organics, www.aubreyorganics.com, has a list of bad hair product ingredients. Also, some natural items, like shea butter and coconut oil, have health benefits that are helpful in more than pretty hair. There more reasons but research will show alot.

4. Browse through message boards such as www.naturallycurly.com for information and leads on styles, hair care and other things.

5. Have fun!! Consider your hair like your newest toy. A lot will be trial and error b/c we are all very different. Don`t consider yourself having a bad hair day, but seeing the results of God-given beauty.

Your hair may react differently to each product. Flax seed oil straightened my hair. Shea butter made it curl and darken.

Every few months, you may need to change techniques as your hair grows. I went from styling with fingers to a rake to a regular pick to a comb to a heavy duty comb and super long pick.

God bless.

Check out books like "Let`s Talk Hair" by Pamela Ferrell. There are several books out there. They provide a wealth of information.

my hair was down my back all the way for all of my life but straightened, so I decided to try something new and cut it myself where the new growth began. I love it. I know that everyone`s hair is different, but you should relax. there is no reason to have to cover it up with a wig. Try braiding it. I like to use jojoba oil or something else that it pretty thick. I put it in while my hair is still wet from the shower, and I go on my way. It`s great!

wow, i kinda feel your pain. except my hair is about 5 inches long and it only took me about 5 months. strange, huh? but anyways, what i do sometimes is twist it up in these little things (in jamaica we call then chini-bumps and i cant really describe them, sorry) and it keeps them feeling really nice and silky and moist. yes, i know, it sux once the hair dries, cuz it feels kinda blah, but if you braid/twist it and then pin it back to your head, it will dry a bit straighter, so it won`t shrink to a little puffball that looks kinda strange. i hope i helped, and you might want to see what people replied to my post (if any at all) because we kind of have the same problem, and even if we dont, i think their suggestions to my problems will be worth a try.
;) :) ;)

I am new to going natural myself, and am not nearly as accomplished as my other sisters here (last relaxer about 2 1/2 months ago, about 1/2 inch of growth), but there is a book called "Good Hair: For colored girls who`ve considered weaves when the chemicals became too ruff" by Lonnice Brittenum Bonner that is absolutely excellent. It has everything from styles to products, and the how to`s......whatever you ever wanted to know about going natural.I don`t know what it retails for where you are,but at most online bookstores,it`s about $9-$11, and it`s worth every penny!!!!!!!!!!

I feel you girly! I`ve been natural for 2yrs & 2mnths now. I HAD relaxed hair, past bra-length, and I completely choped it down to 2in. of natural hair! It took me a long time (paitence, luv, & tears) to figure this out but now my hair is an inch past my chin of nothing but wild healthy curls. I realized that natural hair needs natural things, & not that shea butter crap b/c I tried it too starting out. You need oil that is comparable to your own natural oil. Jojoba oil is great but I use Aveda`s "beautifying oil" and Proclaim`s "glossing polish" (luv it!). The absolute best kind of shampoo & conditioner, to me, for my natural hair is completely organic ones. Ones in the Af.Am. section seem to be geared toward relaxed hair. I use Avalon Organic Botanicls or Aubreys "GPB". With organic conditioners I`ve found its okay to leave a little bit of conditioner still in my hair instead of rinsing it all out. It works well as its own leave-in conditioner. I don`t mess much w/gels b/c I don`t really need it since the oil works so well. I recommend while its still in the short-faze to keep it wrapped up in a fashionable head-scarf or a simple cap. Its dries out so easily from the wind & things. But I feel if you follow this routine in a couple of weeks your hair will be restored to its natural ph-balance and be moist & soft instead of brittle. Keep at it, I went through it and it was worth it!

I really hate giving advice on natural hair because it seems that everyone`s natural hair is diffrent but here it goes.

1. I rinse my hair everyday in the shower I usually rinse with a condit and wash once a week I use redken all soft shampoo and kenra moisture conditioner they work great.

2. I don`t use any oils I haven`t for almost a year now and my hair is not dry by any means I use l`anza leave in conditioner and bouncy cream curl definer for my hair.

3. I deep condition once a week with aubrey GPB.

When I first heard about the no oil method I thought it was crazy I mean every since I was a little girl I used grease or oil, but since giving it a tryy my hair moves, it can breath and it is by no means dry. I do wet my hair everyday so this could be one of the reasons why it isn`t dry. I started with about 2inches of hair and am now at about chin length hair. I haven`t used a blow dryer in months. I`ve been natural for about a year now.

well, although i am not african american, i have very dry hair that is also quite fragile so for moisture i use african royale hot six oil. i wash and condition my hair every other day and once it is dry (from air drying) i apply the oil from the ears down (most heavily on the ends). honestly, its one of the only things that has worked for my dry hair. i have tried cream moisturizers but they make my hair feel rough and heavy. not sure if this helps at all but congrats on going natural, i have heard what a great amount of commitment it can take.
PS. i use a hot oil treatment once a week, too.
