Well, Louisa, there are different types of extensions. Glued on, sewn in, and that other technique where the hair is glued to separate strands of hair. I have had extensions that were sewn in, in a horizontal weird manner, with some hair left out in front to conceal the weft and create a more natural look.

Regardless, it is NOT that hard to get an Ashanti look. Just buy the hair long enough, get the proper color that matches your hair, and get a REALLY GOOD quality of hair. I must definitely stress the quality of hair point, because trying to be cheap will have you ending up with thick, nasty hair that tangles in a snap. (I`ve learned my lesson) If you get Yaky hair, make sure that it is really YAKY. I bought that imitation doodoo, and I was mad three weeks later when I had to take it out. Oh yeah, and you must find a stylist who knows what they are doing. You would hate to have to buy all of this hair and then have to take it out because the stylist didn`t sew it in correctly, or it was too tight, etc.

I ended up taking my tracks out after 3 weeks, due to the hair becoming awfully tangled after I tried to wash my scalp with Head and Shoulders to kill the itchiness. Oh, and another thing. If you have sensitive scalp (like the flake issues) beware. Tracks can be your itchiest nightmare.

Anyways, have fun.:)

Some people choose to leave their extensions in for a few months, while others, a few weeks. It depends on the person really, and how long they can handle them. Most people take them out when they start to look too old for their taste. Again, it depends on the person.

You would treat it like your own hair, but what I learned about extensions, is that it takes MORE care than your own hair. Washing my hair was a bit nerve wrecking, since I couldn`t clean all of the nooks and crannies. My hair was in cornrows, so it was virtually impossible for me to clean my scalp as much as I would have liked to.

But what`s fun about them is that you can create a VARIETY of hairstyles, depending on how long you get them. Mine were like past bra-length, and I had a great time playing in it. Making curls, you name it! That`s the best benefit of having extensions is that they can be very versatile, depending on how you get them placed into your hair.

I recommend getting them sewn in because it is not as damaging as getting them attached to your hair with glue. Also, leave some hair out in the front (not a lot but enough to conceal the weft) so that it has a more natural look and you can get your ponytails pulled back.

AND BUY A GOOD PACK OF HAIR!

Believe me! I wouldn`t have had to take them out so quickly if only I had brought some decent hair. If you don`t, then the hair will tangle awfully. And I had human hair, which makes me wonder.....

Oh, and make sure that you have plenty of new growth or some thick roots before getting tracks. My other biggest mistake was getting them 3 weeks after a touch-up. They started to loosen up right after I washed hair, which was one week after I got them.

Shoooo.....All of this extension talk makes me want to get some more!:)

Of course you can! Sometimes, it is best to go to a professional since they have experience doing that type of thing, and they learned the different techniques in school. Sometimes, the girl around your corner can do tracks (like the neighborhood street stylists, you know what I mean), since they aren`t that difficult, but, if you aren`t sure, try to find a stylist who has experience in them. Most hairdressers can do them. Just get out your Yellow Pages phone book, and call all of the hairdressers under the "Beauty" category, and see if you can find one that has the best price options for you.

But, beware. Extensions are costly. They may even tell you that you need to buy your own hair, but just remember to pick out some hair that doesn`t tangle and mat. And if you go to one of those beauty supply stores that has Chinese people working there, do not ask them what hair you should buy!!!! They gave me some cheap Yaky hair. Awful, just awful....:(

Don`t do it!!!!!

You need someone who actually knows what they are doing and understand, not saying that to talk bad about them or anything, but you need help from someone that can relate to you, just like I wouldn`t be telling you about extensions if I never had them. It`s just that the guy gave me the worst hair when I said "Yaky. He gave me some mess called "Yaki." I didn`t realize it until I educated myself later and learned from the experience.

I`ll tell you now that if you have thin hair, don`t buy Yaky. It`s too thick. I have thick hair and I won`t buy Yaky ever again if I decide to wear tracks again.

Good luck!

Hey.

I can`t really answer that question, since I`m not an expert in the field. However, I will tell you that a lot of people with thick hair tend to choose Yaky.

This here is a VERY informative link concerning the different types of hair textures.:)

I have enclosed some other links that I think may help you.

I think this one is the best site for African-Americans who want a weave or a WIG. And also it features YAKY!!!! You can get really good cloesups, so that you can have a better view of the hair`s texture.

Be careful Louisa with picking a stylist. Make sure you see photos of their work before you decide to choose them!

Absolutely! And go to a consultation first, so that you can get an idea of the stylist`s personality, and you can discuss with them what method they are going to use on your hair. And then, you can get a better idea of the prices, methods, etc.

Keep me updated!

Oh, that`s okay. :)

Choosing a color is fun, considering that you don`t have to dye your own hair. That`s what I loved about weaves.
