My hair has always been a problem for me . . . I have typical African-American hair, nappy, textured, etc. Which wouldn`t be so much of a problem if I didn`t have so much of it!! It`s really long (I`ve never cut it in my life, it goes down a little past my waist when I pull it to straighten out the curl), and really thick. And there`s just a lot of it. It`s impossible to manage with it`s out, it has so little weight. I`ve managed to control it recently by putting it in braids (no extensions), which come down about to my bra-strap and look like full "regular" hair, but I don`t really like the look of them.

What I want is somewhat long, wavy-ish hair. Basically, hair that I can wear out without having to think about it too much! I have here a picture of Tyra Banks with the hair that I would like to have. (http://www.celebritygarden.com/images/image_galleries/tyra_banks/pages/tyrabanks044.html) I`m pretty sure she`s wearing extensions in the picture, but I probably wouldn`t need to since I have to much. I used a mild relaxer on my hair, and it did nothing for the immense volume of it, just worked basically as a detangler. Would I have to use a really strong relaxer? What kind do you lovely ladies recommend? And then maybe something for shine, or something to give it that slightly wavy quality that she has in the picture?

I`m only 14, and go to a mostly white private school in Brooklyn, so none of my friends can really help me. My mom doesn`t have half the amount of hair I do, and my dad, well, my dad`s clueless. I don`t know where all this came from! I thought maybe you guys could help me though :)

Please, please, PLEASE help me! I`m desperate!

Dear Lizzy
You sound that you have very beautiful hair. You must not refer to it in a negative way, that it is nappy, which I know that a lot of African-American refer to our hair as nappy. Our hair is kinky and very thick curls, kinks, and coils. A lot of African-American women would like to have thick waist length hair. It sounds so gorgeous. Anyway, at school, I think that your hair should be in a practical style and going out to parties, etc, then you put your hair in a party style etc.
The best way to manage your hair is to make up a spray with some glycerine, rosewater and water and spray on your hair. Your hair would be easy to detangle and it will not be so unmanageable. For school are you able to put your hair in twists, or buntu knots, or cornrows, it would look very pretty. Visit website that specialise in African textured hair, such as www.nappturality.com, yahoo groups such as long natural hair etc. Tyra Banks is a model and she has a weave for her model assignments, for the picture to be taken, there is a lot of hot curling, blow drying etc. If she used her own hair, after a while her hair would break. That style looks very nice, but it should be only reserved for parties, weddings etc. I would really recommend you go to a salon which specialises in looking after long African textured hair. The style was achieved by blow drying and setting on hot rollers. I think that a mild relaxer is fine, and stronger one would break your hair. With the mild one, you could use an electric comb to carefully press your hair, then use a curling tongs, or curling iron to get the effect like Tyra, let your mum help you and put products to stop any damage by heat, heat can damage your hair and also it will keep your hair in place. Good products like Keracare, other good styling products like Nexus, etc will help you. Look at magazines for African American hair and see hair styles which are easy for you to achieve. I hope I have helped you. Please, please use heat very sparing. Remember that your hair is very beautiful and it has to be treated like finest silk.
Best Wishes
