QuoteReplyTopic: Child has 5 inches of Dead hair. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Posted: May 30 2004 at 11:40am
Hello everyone. I sure hope you can help me.
Wet my 7yr old daughter's hair is past the middle of her back ofcourse dry it shrinks alot. I took her to the Salon Fri. And wash shocked at how much dead ends/hair she had. I knew it was soaking up moisture BIG TIME, but wow. I actually saw it. It was about 5 in. My fault because she's only had a hair trim in her life, I've probably used the harsh shampoo, brushing, bad products w/mineral/alcohol etc. Plus, she has fine/way hair on the roots but 1/2 down it's VERY dry w/spiral-coil curls. What makes it worse, she's VERY tender headed esp in the back.. The stylist suggested we cut off 1 1/2 inch now. Every 2-3 mos she'll cut 1/4 in off ( if it's ok w/me). She said not 6-8 because blk hair grows slower than caucasion hair.
Before this I had already purchased the Aussie line, Marc Anthony strictly curls and Curlbiz.com for Multi-racial/texture hair (hasn't arrived yet) Now I"m not sure if this will work. I"m not sure which will work but I figured I had to start somewhere....Reading here, the Mega Growth sounds great for her scalp too. ..My ? is, Is 1/2 in too much in 2-3 months plus I've been reading on the cite naturallycurly.com, that shampoo is bad for you. I'm not sure now how often to give her hot oil treatments/deep conditoners.
Your comments, suggestions and advice w/b greatly welcomed. Thank you

ok first of all I would like to make a correction. Black hair do not grow slower. People believe it does it grows 1/4 to 1/2 inch like everyone elses hair. The reason it seems alot shorter is because Black hair ( not all but your daughters) is curlly and grows upwards and outwards. Stretched out it can be about 2 times the length of the curled hair.
1) nothing wrong with using shampoo but it can strip oils that flow from the scalp. Since her hair is curly oils do not flow directly from scalp to hair it has to travel. USE SHAMPOO ONCE A WEEK
2) the key is to keep moisture in the hair. USE MAINLY CONDITIONER. YOU CAN CONDITION AS MUCH AS YOU WANT OR WET IT. BUT MAKE SURE TO SHAMPOO AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK BECAUSE IT IS A DETERGENT TO GET RID OF HAIR.
3) COME HER HAIR WHEN WET OR HAS CONDITIONER ON IT / LEAVE IN CONDITIONER. IT IS EASIER AND IT SHOULD NOT HURT HER. CURLY HAIR IS FRAGILE, IT IS NOT AS STRONG AS PEOPLE BELIEVE SO BE CAREFUL AND WETTING OR MOISTURIZING THE HAIR WITH CONDITIONER/LEAVE IN CONDITIONER/ HAIR LOTION WILL HELP THE COMBING GO ALOT SMOOTHER.
Thanks Cmesweet That info was so helpful. I visit the naturallycurly website and they say the same regarding condiitoners. Some of them don't use it at all. They clarify with like Brown sugar and ACV (vinegar) to get rid of build ups.
Her hair is sooo different from mines. Mines is curly but the curls are much loser than hers.I shampoo mines 2x a month condition a few times inbetween deep cond etc and my hair's constantly growing and is as healthy as it has EVER been (thank God). I want the same for her too. Anyway, I did hear from other's our hair grows a bit slower, and I assumed she (the trained beautician) knew what she was talking about. I ordered some products from the www.naturallycurly site (Curly Q for multi-textured hair), so we'll see how it goes. If I have more questions I will surely contact you. You seem very knowledgeable. Again ty
She takes swim lessons every wk. Ofcourse the water gets in her cap because her hairs soaked when I remove the cap. Someone suggested a product by Agree called Ultra swim a conditioner to protect hair from the chlorine. Any suggestions. I'm thinking whatever I get I'll probably have to braid her hair. Being that the cond is smooth, if the cap did happen to fall (it has tho kinda tight) would I be defeating the purpose? This would prob be the day I'd wash/shampoo the hair? My sister shamp/wash her daughter's hair wkly and 1 day in between she conditions only. This doesn't seem like alot of cond but it's working for her.

Did you check out the site motowngirl.com as well. I am now natural because I use to have a perm. I have spoken to a few people who swim on a regular basis, I have yet to do it. They said they wet their hair than put in conditioner and than the cap. The things you do sound good as well. It is different for every person.
The reason the hair dresser said that like I mentioned as our hair grow it coils around itself of course it will look shorter but everyones hair is programed by genetics 1/4 to 1/2 inches in length per month. Trimming the split ends do help to allow the hair shaft to be healthy. People with perms seem to have longer hair because their hais is straighten out but if it was natural it would look shorter cause of the direction the hair grows and the curls. Chemicals, heat and alot of manipulation can cause hair to grow at a slower pace because you break the bonds of the hair and alot of times it gets over process causing more breakage making the hair appear to grow slow or to not grow at all.
Naturallycurly.com is a good site as well I do recommend the site of motowngirl.com and hairfoodforthought.com

Yes it seems like alot of conditioner. I condition wash my hair 3 times a week. Then on sundays I use shampoo to get rid of any buildup that has taken place.
Conditioner is good because it helps to seal in moisture in the hair. Like i mentioned before, curly hair needs moisture. Although, our scalp has natural oils it takes longer to travel onto a curly path. So conditioner or anything that has water as a main ingredient, hair lotions are good for the hair. Try to stay away from hair products that has mineral oil or Petroleum in it. Don't forget to look at the sites that I have given you.
Just cut like 1 cm of all her hair like a trim her hair should but perfect in weeks on and everybodys hair is dead all hair is dead cells just like fingernails
I have another question kinda of silly but I feel comfortable asking it.
My sister gave me both the MegaGrowth and the Elasta QP Mango Moisturizer. When I read both, it really didn't say anything about using once in awhile on the scalp. Could I use it once and a while on her scalp. I know for the Mango it did say the ends. Both smells great.
And Sweet, I have been reading the Motowngirl Cite and OMG is it a GREAT site. Have to go take daughter to see Shreik :)..Again thanks ...Jan

Well I don't see anything wrong with putting it on the scalp one in a while. I'm sure if you aren't putting it on there everyday that it will be a problem. I keep hearing about this product I really need to try it. I just got a 1800 number for it to get free samples.
We did it was too funny. Eddie Murphy is a trip. Anyway, which product are you referring to? The Mango or the Megagrowth. I'm thinking the mega growth is mainly to moisturize the hair, they have a root/scalp that I am going to exchange it for. I will keep the mango it's mainly for the ends and hair and it smell good enuf to EAT girl.

The product that I am talking about is the Mango. I plan on taking my God-Sister to see the movie. She is seven, so we are going to have a girls day out!!
