when i was younger i had nice hair, (i've got 5 sisters who still do have beautiful hair down there backs)when i was 14-19 i used to do mad things in my hair i bleached it, cut it, shaved it, had every colour undr the rainbow, permed it, bonded it..you name it i've done it. the past year i've been trying to look after it better, i've kept it in micro braids and get it re done every 14 weeks the problem is my hair is completely damaged now its about 6inches long, very thin, very nappy and everyone wonders if im a foster child since i got bad hair and they have lovely long thick wavy hair. i've read some tips on these boards that i wanna follow but if anyone else as tips i'd apreciate thanks in advance.

Your hair is bad because it's unhealthy and damaged?
There is a site or forum...u have to pay to be a member but u can view the forum and get great advice. It has helped many with the health of their hair and growth. Wearing braids too often can cause breakage and traction alopecia, please be careful with those.

before i put the braids in i cut off all the unhealthy & damaged hair, i'm doing my best to look after it now but in between braids i wont leave it out until it becomes thicker, it is very thin. (my familys is very thick!)

OK well how are you taking care of your hair while in the braids? Like i mentioned, the site that I gave u is very helpful just read the forum. Make sure you don't keep your braids in too long up to 2 months is good enough. Make sure to rinse them and keep them moisturized espeically if u are using synthetic hair, it can suck up the moisture in YOUR hair. Before you put them in do a deep conditioning, then put them in a few days later. Give your hair at least a 2 week break before putting them back in.
If your hair is really as badly damaged as you say, I would suggest cutting off all of the damaged portion to start fresh. You may not want to cut you hair short, but if will be worth it in the long run to have a full head of healthy hair. When my hair became damaged from perms and styles that pull, I kept it braided in medium size braids until I had just enough lenght to cut it. I then kept it in medium braids that were not tight for about 9 months and I know have a full healthy head of unprocessed hair...Hope this helps...

CME sweet, i'm looking after my hair by moisturising it everyday with shea butter, using a biotin shampoo twice weekly, taking nature's plus ultimate oil vitamins which contain, (MSM,Black currant oil,evening primrose,vitamin e,flaxseed oil,pumpkin n saltfloer seeds, lecithin, gamma linolenic acid and more..) using braid relief by dr miracles my hair appears to hav grown an inch at the back where i took a few braids off, i've also cut all the damaged hair my hair was maybe 10inches but i cut it to 5. I also get a steamed treatment fortnightly and a chinese head massage every month i'm eating healthy, drinking lots of water and my nails are 3x longer than usual (there always long but now extra long) i also cover my braids in a silk wrap to me this is an improvement to a girl that used to neglect her hair completely and i think in a few years my hair will be how it started off until i started messing with it (all the things i done to it was D-I-Y, bleaching, perming, s-curl, texturising, relaxing, curly perming, dying so no wonder my hair rebelled! thanks for both y'all advice
Wow, de je vu. I just cut off my damage last month from something very similar to what you described.
Sounds like you are on the right track. Here is what i learned from LHCF:
Have the damage cut off and start over. If that would leave you just way too short, have half cut off (that's what I did).
If you are heat styling, I would say stop if you can or at very least minimize it.
Get a good moisturizer and keep you hair moisturized (I find sweet almond oil and creamy conditioner as a leave in works really well). Deep condition it weekly.
Wear protective styles (if you can - mine is currently too short to do buns or anything) and baby your hair.
Never brush it when it is wet and very gently comb it with a wide toothed comb. Don't over brush or comb at any point. Try to keep manipulation to a minimum.
Wear a silk scarf when you sleep or get silk or satin pillow cases.
Avoid anything harsh: shampoos with Sodium Laurel Sulfate and alcohol hair sprays, etc.
If you relax your hair, try stretching it as long as you can (10 or more weeks) and use mild, if possible for touch ups.
Most important of all, keep a positive frame of mind about your hair. It’s a learning curve and our hair told us when enough was enough. Take time with it and treat it right. It will grow back healthy and beautiful! HTH.
