QuoteReplyTopic: Converting from relaxed to natural hair Posted: February 25 2005 at 12:04pm
Could anyone share their experiences about converting from relaxing hair to natural hair styles (either press or twists, etc.) I have decided to do this and want to see input from others about there experiences.
I'm doing it too! going natural that is, So far things are going ok, its been about 10 weeks, since my last relaxer I heard it will take about year if you have short hair ( and I do)
I want to get braids! once before I tried to go natural and got braids but they drove me nuts after a week took them down and got a perm, but this time I'm really stickin to it! I want to get really long individual braids, for fashion and because they will last a while, if i keep getting them done, it wont take long to get this perm out, and then after that decide what to do with it, I want to try natral free hair, and not braid it up or anything just let it go!
sorry i could not give you more advise or input but I'm new to this 2!
Can you keep your relaxed hair while going natural?? Just wondering because if I could keep my hair natural and soft to grow out, I would, but I'm always afraid that I won't be able to control it and it'll get tangled and unmanageable.
The problem with relaxed hair is that since it is chemically treated, it's much more brittle than your natural hair. So unless your natural hair and your relaxed hair are fairly similiar in texture, chances are good that in combing through the natural hair, you will break bits of the relaxed hair off. You could certainly hold on to it, but only you can decide if it's worth the extra time and TLC it will require to keep the entire strand looking healthy.
Make every day you have count, before the time comes for you to count every day you have.

SSugar said it all. It's pretty difficult keeping your hair out while growing out a perm...personally, i think the breakage (which is very real) is pretty traumatic for most people and frankly you have to be creative to really make your hair look good with so many divergent textures on one head.
if your balking at the idea of cutting it all out at once, do it slowly and wear different braided styles or sew in a weave...you do have options even while transitioning. for me, it took about a year and a half of growth (usually braided) to get the length i had before stopping the perm (at shoulder in back, and shorter around my face)...and this was with my college lifestyle: no vitamines whatsoever, coke as a substitute for whatever, and dorm food. lol
really, you just need to be consistent, educate yourself (this is great forum, nappturality.com is a nice site, and my current favorite motowngirl.com are all great sites to start with when it comes to seeing the options you have...)
