My hair is thick, puffy and wavy and about shoudler length and Im 15 years old if it matters. I probaly don't take the best care of my hair, I don't even know what a leave on conditioneer is. I use Herbal essences shampo/conditoneer but I find that it's causing my hair to break. Oh and my hair constantly breaks especially after a bath when I'm putting my fingers through my hair...why does it do this? I never straighten because it takes FOREVER and I just don't have the time and I don't wnat to dry it. I always brush my hair after I take a bath though I've recently heard not to do this but I cannot leave it wet because it puffs and I cannot do anything to it.
I really really hate my hair. Im left to nothing but putting in a ponytail which looks bad on me because I have an oval head. I need to know what I should be doing to benefit my hair. Im completely clueless when it comes to this and will appreciate any help I can get. Also what are some good products for my hair type? Thank you very much.
(1) Don't brush wet hair! That's the biggest cause of breakage-- improper handling while wet. Wet hair should be finger combed or combed with a seamless rake comb (Kent or Rachael Stephens). Mostly curlies and wavies do better with just finger combing.
(2) It might be the ingredients in your conditioner causing the breakage. Scan the bottle for anything ending in "cone" or "conol". Your hair may or may not like it, so give the opposite kind a try (conefree or with-cones, whichever is opposite of your current conditioner). Some people, especially curlies/wavies, find that "cones" make their hair brittle.
(3) It might be the thing you use to tie off your pony. Thin hair ties= breakage, scrunchies= happy hair
And here's my duplicate post concerning moisture and conditioning:
C= conditioner, W= wash (I use CWC, WCC, and a CWCC every so often)
CO (conditioner only): getting rid of shampoo completely and cleaning your scalp and length with cheapo C, finishing off with your regular C. CWC: a cheapo C on the length before shampoo, then shampoo, then regular C after shampoo) WCC: shampoo, then condition with two different kinds in a row (one cheap, one regular) CWCC: personally I work coconut oil through my hair before a wash. and then I shampoo it out. I'll finish that off with two different conditioners (one from the dollar store and another that I use regularly.)
All of these methods I use to keep my coarse and porous hair hydrated. I am Asian and I've found that my wavy/curly friends have the same hair needs as me-- the key thing here is moisture, moisture, moisture. and of course, gentle handling.
If you don't like the puffyness when dry, you'll definitely want to avoid brushing or combing while wet. .. just use your fingers. And better yet, bun it if it's long enough and let it dry in the bun.
A cheapo is basically any super cheap conditioner you can find at a dollar store, or anything under a dollar at Walmart. Like V05, Suave, or weird copyright-infringing knockoffs at the dollar store. Dollar stores often have knockoffs that are discontinued and sold there because they and the original are too legally alike. Herbal Essence has a knockoff called Herbal Essentials or something, and etc..
And it has to be super cheap because... in anything with 2 C's, the first C is used up really quickly. You normally gob on twice the amount. The second C is just the regular conditioner that you like and use normally. Your absolute favorite that your hair can't live without. You save that best for last. ^_<
Thx so much for the reply. Should I alternate with the diferent methods? I do use thin hair ties because scrunchies won't hold up all my hair since there not tight at all. Is there anything I can to get rid of the puffiness and maybe even be able to leave it dwn without any straightneing? I mean it's really ncie and wavy when it's wet but just when it dries it puffs like 3 times it's size and I can't do antyhnig with it. I sooo want dead straight hair. Also could I do anything to make the waves show up because they do dissapear when my hair dries? Thx again for all your help.
The puffiness should go away if you use two conditioners, IMHO. The multiple conditioners will weigh the hair down a bit. And try to brush and comb as little as possible (curls and waves are best combed with fingers only) Thin hair ties will break hair at the tie-off area... so I would only use them if I really really had to. If you can find a textured scrunchie that won't slide out, those are kinder to your hair.
Anyhoo, find one of the conditioning routines that you like best then stick with it as your regular routine. There is no need to rotate (unless your hair likes them all and can't decide on a favorite : P)
Is drying your hair with a towel bad as well? I didn't brush it today and I washed my hair with the WCC method but I used the same conditioneer as I only have one but it made my hair kinda waxy though. My sis blowdried it a little then scrunched it up with mouse. It's now wavy but still a little too puffy for my taste, maybe it'll settle after I sleep. Thx a lot for helping and any mre tips you have, Ill be glad to hear them.
As long as you're squeezing the hair with the towel and not rubbing it, you should be okay. From personal experience I see that volume does "settle" as you go into the second and third days.
My hair was "waxy" the first few times of WCC too... Sometimes a routine takes some adjustment, and sometimes it's not the right one. I would give it a couple more tries before passing it up. Getting a cheap and LIGHT conditioner for the first C will help with that. If it still feels waxy after a couple tries, I think a CWC will probably be better.
Good luck on your journey to a comfortable routine : )
My hair is breaking, taking a shower is like buying a fur coat, my har is all over. What is causing this and how can I fix it? Also does mouse do harm to your hair if used everyday? And Herbal essences doesn't list their ingrdients on their products or their website...do you know if they contain the "cone" you were mentioning? I'm sorry for all the questions but you're such a big help. Thx again :)
Hey, asking questions is what this board is for.. I don't mind helping you one bit.
I found the Herbal Essences ingredients on drugstore.com, which always lists ingredients for everything. They're such a wonderful place, even if I don't buy anything from there!
Do you know for a fact that your hair is breaking and not shedding? If it's just shedding, then there will be a tiny bulb at the end (you can feel it if you run pinched fingers over the end). During adolescence I shedded like crazy, so oftentimes it's hormones that do this. If you count more than 150 shed hairs every day, then that's too much. But if it's between 50-100 average, you should be all right. I say rule out the hormones first.
About mousse... Any hair product can harm your hair if it leaves too much residue for too long. Do you do a clarifying every so often? (clarifying shampoo or diluted apple cider vinegar) That will remove any product buildup, and buildup can make hair crunchy or brittle. I do an ACV rinse every 1-2 weeks. (1/2 cup apple cider vinegar in a 20 oz soda bottle, fill the rest with water)
after three years and 2000 t/r treatments we have swithed recently to a new technology of emzyme based straightening products. Better , faster , safer and 1/2 as expensive as the t/r systems to do. Best shiny smooth hair WITH BODY!!! Never seen anything like it!!! www.rochesalon.com
I'm not convinced. Give me natural hair over chemically processed hair ANY day. Natural hair is stronger hair, less expensive, low maintenance, and soft. Thanks though Dennis.
