Heat protective products - do any actually work?

I use a straightening iron on my hair 3 to 5 times a week. I know there are products (shampoos, conditioners, styling products) that claim to protect hair during heat styling, but do any of them actually work?

Can anyone recommend specific brands/products that have worked for you?

Any other tips to minimize damage from straightening?

Um... let's see.. I don't use a straightening iron but there are some generally-accepted tips:
-- don't straighten hair that is even SLIGHTLY damp
-- don't straighten squeaky clean hair. Do it a day or two after a wash.
-- Use only the minimum heat setting required.
-- ends need less heat than the hair closer to the scalp

I don't believe in heat protective products (shhhhh don't tell) and I'm also notorious for not believing in heat either :) but you've got GUTS, girlfriend!

Thanks for the tips, AnaisSatin... I was hoping there was something out there that actually works, but it's probably just wishful thinking :(

My hair gets really greasy and gross even just a day after washing, so I can't really go without washing it for 2 or 3 days (well, I can, but I have to wear a hat on those days!). I do wash it at night and straighten the next morning, though.

Hair products with thermal protection that contain silicones[silicones end in the word methicone] protect hair from heat damage because silicones seal and smooth hair's cuticle.PVPs damage hair.

i've actually tried to experiment with some creams and hair lotions that are made for "black" hair. not a lot though, just barely enough to get through to all my asian hair. usually black hair is exposed to more heat and chemical treatments, so i figured that the stuff would work... right now i'll wash my hair at night, let it air dry, then use a small dab of cream before i straighten (it's also supposed to help hair hold a heat style better)... or i'll sleep in a night treatment with my head wrapped (yes, like a black girl), wash my hair in the morning and just scrunch with mousse or gel... i dunno what the name of the cream is... i'll look..... sometime

i really want to purchase this item but want to know how it works on women of color with more corse hair than the one they showed in the infomercial. and is it available in the as seen on tv stores yet?
