I think it depends on the shape of your fingers and hands. Short, chubby fingers don't look good with square shaped nails in my opinion. Most nail techs can tell you which shape looks best on you. My hands are big and my fingers long and skinny so they do very square nails on me but I have a friend who wears her nails kind of long and they are very oval and look beautiful. Then there is a combination of the two shapes which has been called squoval (square shape with rounded edges). Try a few and see what you like best.

I personally prefer oval. If my nails are even slightly shaped like squares I can't stand it! I hate that look! I always spend at least an hour perfecting my nail shape...i'm picky and i have thick, long nails...I know it is popular for french manicures but i don't like it at all. I think that most people look better with oval...but that is just me.

I have sorta big hands with long fingers and they grow naturally in a square shape. When my natural nails get long they look beautiful squared but when I used to were tips they didn't look right squared I had to were them oval shaped. Also when I wore tips they used to look so fake with colored polish. I could only get an american manicure which made my tips looks natural. But if it came down to choosing which shape I like the best it would be square shape for natural nails and oval or false nails.

Both when I had acrylics and now with my natural nails, I prefer square but with the edges kind of rounded. I didn't like how sharp the edges were when they were completely square. I agree with some of the others, either ask your technician what they think is best for your type of hands or try it out several different ways to see first hand.
