Careful, it can be addictive!  I even worked myself into a case of trichotillomania about a year back because I got so obsessed with pulling out weird kinky hairs!  (I stopped when I stayed at a hotel that had an elevator with mirrors in it and lights right over your head....I could see my thick halo of all those short newly growing hairs!).

You have the right to speak with the person who will cut your hair before you get in the chair.  If you don't feel you can trust them to do exactly what you ask, you can leave.  (Or if there's pressure, you can schedule an appointment for a later time, then call back and cancel later).  You should never allow anyone to push something on your hair that you do not want.

Hi,

Yes it can be addictive but in an odd way, I find it relaxing to do since usually all I do is work, work, work and then work some more  Yes, I know I am a workaholic and have an addictive personality but at this point I am aware of my work addiction and focus on providing balance in my life by taking scheduled time off to read or relax.  And oddly, sniping the ends are calming.  So I take time for that.

I bought some expensive trimming scissors but find that the Conair Professional Barber shears work just as well and are way less expensive.

Today I made an appointment with a new hairdresser because my former quit the biz to go work in a lawyers office.  The previous hairdresser, Shelley, is still MIA somewhere in Arizona.  Maybe I jinx hairdessers so that they quit?  LOL.

Anyway, the new hairdresser talked to me on the phone about my highlights (I haven't had them done in about 9 months) and I told her I wanted her to use Matrix SoColor which has been used on my hair for years.  She said she wanted to try Redken.  Well of course I was totally against that.  Then she asked if I needed a trim?  I said NO very forcefully.  Supposedly she specializes in "long hair" but I am going to be very cautious until I know that I can trust her.  I am taking someone to the salon with me for the first visit.

Meanwhile, the fact that she asked me about a trim made me aware of my split ends and I have been snipping off and on all afternoon.  :-)  I even bought a new pair of shears just for the purpose.  And I think my hair looks better after just a little dusting.

Anyway...enough rambling...I am really enjoying all the input.  Fascinating.

Karen

Wow ... trichotillomania ... sorry to hear that!

See, with me I don't actually pull the whole hair out of my head.  I just break off the "split" piece which is usually right at the end of my hair.  I am very, oh what's the word I'm looking for...???...??? vain (?) about my hair--I am very careful with it and I try to keep it looking healthy and shiny ... that salon visit really messed my mind up over this whole situation because now I'm obsessed with trying to get it back into "beautiful" condition ... I think I've bought every product for "dry and damaged hair" that they sell ... I guess the best I can do right now is "mask" the damage :(

Thanks for the reply :)

Search and distroy!!!! I have too many split ends, and I try to do it once every couple days, but I don't think that's enough with all the splits I have. I got a trim about 3 weeks ago, but it didn't help much. I don't have too many more of the splits at the ends, but a lot of the ones that look like balls of dust on the hair shaft. Arrrrgggg.  Writing about this makes me want to go grab a pair of scissors and S&D!!

The problem with this is that each break forms a split. Unless you trim it above the broken part, you are not removing the damage.

I just got a nice trim on Sunday and pretty much all of my split ends are gone ... my hair looks beautiful and healthy again---I feel so happy now :)

Thank you, I cannot tell you what a relief it was to read this post!! I have been driving myself CRAZY wondering what those little "beads" were and if other people had them. I cannot tell you how long I have wondered this, thanks for the explanation.

I too, have a problem with wanting to search this little buggers out and then breaking them off, which I know is TERRIBLE. My question is, can coloring alone cause these? Should I snip these little guys off when I find them or can you salvage the hair? I totally moisturize since I have naturally wavy/curly hair that is on the fine side, but I let my hair air dry 95% of the time.  However, I do curl my hair maybe 1 to 2 times a week-but I use styling products to protect and I never wrap the ends around the iron. Is it because I lighten my hair?  Despite this, stylists say my hair is healthy, soft, shiny, and in overall good condition. I deep condition every other week and use professional products suited for my hair. Just curious, would appreciate some opinions on this one since I have been trying to grow it forever and can never get it past a certain point (because of breakage, genetics, who knows?) Tainted, if you have any suggestions or comments I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Hi norskygrl21.

Don't those little beads just drive you CRAZY?  I had no idea what those little suckers were until I came across this hair site that describes every type of hair ailment known...and they actually show you the hair follicles under a microscope...you would be SHOCKED to see what those "beads" really look like under a microscope--the whole hair shaft at that point is exploded...it can never be salvaged.  Your best bet would be to cut them off above the break whenever you find one, HOWEVER...please be careful and try not to go overboard.  If you have them all over the place and they're high up on the hair shaft you will wind up chopping off half of your hair.  If that's the case, I would definitely suggest going to the salon and getting a professional trim.  When I went for my trim last Sunday, all I wanted was a "small trim" because just like you I am trying to grow my hair long (down to like the middle of my back--right now it's about 1/6 down by back).  But with all those pesky "beads" more needed to be trimmed and now my hair looks so much more healthier...it's amazing.

I bought all of these "long and strong" products and heat protectants and oils and, etc etc etc...lol...to protect my hair in hopes that I will not have to get a "big trim" the next time I go.

Also, with me I also color my hair so I'm not really sure if that's what causes the "beads"--I will post the link to that hair site for you to check out.

Since I'm so worried about ruining my hair I have made an appointment for the salon to get my hair done with this "protein glaze" that will return my hair to my natural color while it infuses it will all these essential proteins that will restore my hair.  The lady is also going to put framing highlights in my hair so my hair still looks "light."  I'm excited and scared at the same time...lol.  I'll let you know how it turns out.

http://www.pg.com/science/haircare/hair_twh_74.htm

For the "beads" look at the title "Trichorrhexis nodosa"

When you get to the bottom of each page just click on "next page" and it will take you through the chapters.

To go to the very beginning of the site click on "Table of Contents."

Hope this helps.  Let me know.

OH MY GOD! That website rocks, but I must say the close-ups of the damaged hair follicles made me break out in a cold sweat! I do not have a ton of them, I mostly see them on random hairs around my face that get the most heat applied via curling iron, which would make snipping the random beads relatively easy. Do you think I should be using more product and turning my iron down lower? Like I said before, I rarely blow dry anyways and I my stylists never run the color through to the ends either, plus I get regular trims professionally which is a discouraging thought because I am STILL getting these. Now I worry I have not been using enough product on the ends....  Thanks for all your help, I can now take better preventative measures.
