It was reported in the news media today that the The North Caroline Medical Board is currently investigating the need to strengthen its regulations for laser hair removal due to the recent death of North Carolina State student Shiri Berg. Ms. Berg died of a Lidocaine overdose after applied the gel to her legs before a scheduled laser hair removal session.
As a result of Ms. Berg's death, the NC Medical Board is hearing testimony from laser hair removal experts regarding the need for more training and much stronger regulations for practioners of laser hair removal. At debate is the idea that patients are should not be candidates for laser hair removal are being treated by technicians that were not properly trained or received minimal training. In some cases, this can result in danger to the laser hair removal client and in some rare cases, can result in death, as in the case of Ms. Berg.
