Just wondering what everyone thinks about layers. My stylist tells me that he thinks I would regret it because right now my hair is all one length and down to my lower back. I would just like a little more framing around my face but don`t know if he`s right and i`m nervous?!?!? I`ve been perming it for the last two years but it normally takes about six hours so between time and damage it does to my hair i`m looking for something different. Let me know what y`all think. Thanks!

All I can say is, think about it awhile. Don`t just spur of the moment cut the layers. I don`t know how many E-mails I have read from people crying because they cut layers into their hair and hated it. All one length and down to your lower back? I would love to have your hair. Please appreciate what you`ve got - I`m sure it looks wonderful.

Hi Jessie,

If your stylist thinks you would regret it, then I think that should be resounding proof that you shouldn`t do it, afterall, most stylists like nothing more than to snip long hair. From my own opinion, I have to agree with your stylist, long hair all one length to your lower back sounds heavenly and I think layers would only detract from the overall beauty of your hair. As the saying goes, if it ain`t broke don`t fix it, and your hair sure doesn`t sound like it needs fixing. Please don`t rush in and do something you will hate and regret a short time later.

If you wish to contact me for further discussion, please feel free to do so.

Best wishes,

John

Thanx for your opinions. I have been thinking about it for quite some time and I had layers a LONG time ago and swore at that time that I would never do it again and here I am. Isn`t it strange how you can see pictures of other people with long hair that looks about the same as yours but for some reason it looks very pretty on them and very plain on you!!!! What do you all think about perms. I sure get a lot of compliments on it when it`s permed compared to straight. I think because it looks like I have so much hair. It really does make it look a lot fuller.

Hello,

I personally like straight hair very much and I remember I was highly confused as women I knew permed it. The long straight hair that sometimes is called boring I like most. I justify my feelings with the insight that genius often looks simple, but it is a hard way to reach it.

I think you can find appreciation for every type of hair style and also people who dislike it, but if the hair is in correspondence with your feelings it`s the best choice. Happy people are always the best partner for any kind of conversation.

I appreciate your stylist you told from. It`s a great thing that he really takes care of you, independent from cost calculations.

Is your hair permed or straight right now? I like both as long as they aren`t too over-done. Permed hair doesnt look nice when the curls are really tight, but spiral or loose curls are nice. Staight hair looks cool but it looks awful if it lacks body or if it is really thin.
Now going back to the layers conversation, If you feel that you really dont feel comfortable having layers cut into your hair, dont do it! I used to have hair down to my lower back and I wanted to have it cut to my shoulders, so eventually I had it cut. It turns out that I hated it, and that is when I realized I wasnt ready to have it cut. Im still growing it now, and I still cry about it. I know all of this sounds really shallow, but if you layer your hair you could cause a lot of damage to yourself( I mean emotionally).
I think that layers on your length hair would be a good idea though, cos its not like you are cutting it all off. I think that it would be a big improvement on what you already have, and would also add body. Some advice- if you decide to go through with it dont have the layers cut too high at first, just a few long ones. Then if you are happy with it you can have some more higher ones done. If you dont like it though, you dont have to wait that long for it to grow back. SORTED!
I hope I helped you, but I am sure that if you choose to have it layered it will look real pretty.

Right now my hair is between stages. The perm is not completely out but it`s not straight yet either. It`s in the bad wavy stage right now. My hair is naturally straight and VERY thick so although it`s full, when it`s straight, I think it`s so heavy that it pulls the body out. That`s where I run into problems with perms because I would really like nice soft pretty curls, but both times I have had that done they tell me my hair is too heavy and it would pull the curl out. They`ve done a spiral perm both times and it`s turned out nice. That`s another reason I thought about layers. Either for a perm or hot rollers on those special occasions. And I would definitely do long layers just in case. Thank you everyone for the replies. It`s nice to know what other people think too!!

layers tangle easier subjecting your hair to more stress and damage.

because of the layers the hair doesnt` reflect light as easily as one length. in turn your hair looks dull.

my reasons/observations for growing my layers out.
Hair type: fine but thick; natural blonde with 15% grey

Hi Jessie,

Just for a different opinion, I`ll throw in my two cents. I`m not exactly sure what you mean by "layers." I`m personally not fond of the layers ala 1970s where the layers are all over the head. But on me personally, I like the front of the hair on my sides angled down, starting just under the chin. I have a body wave, but I like the additional softness that the "layers" (or maybe a better term would be `angling`) give me. I use jumbo hot rollers (which are a lot better on the hair than a straight curling iron!), and I really do love the added fullness and "curve" on the side of my hair.

However, we`re all different, so the only real piece of advice that I`d give you is to make sure if you do it that you`ve thought about it for awhile and are relatively certain that`s what you want (probably no one is 100% confident of every decision he makes!).

Is it possible that you could get a "digicut?" That`s where you digitally put your face into someone else`s hairstyle in a computer program. It certainly isn`t flawless, but it may give you a better idea on how your hair may look.

Best wishes, no matter what you decide!

Jennifer

All I can say without knowing what you look like is that I always thought long straight hair which was all one length was the most beautiful. Especially when the hair is thick like yours is.

It has also been my experience that those women with curly hair wish it were straight. Appreciate what you have. Your hair will be healthier and look better that way.

I think layers are ESSENTIAL for those with thick hair. If I did not have layers, my hair would look boring and dated. Layers can be moderate to give the hair movement or it can be more dramatic.

I think you should try layers, but just go too dramatic cuz it doesn`t seem like you are ready for that.
