How long would you say hair dye from the store stays good? My sister has some dye that she has had in the closet for 2 years and wants to use it... Is it a good idea, what could happen if she uses it...? Thanks

I read somewhere it's best to use it within a year of purchase.  I'm not sure what'll happen if you use it after that, though.  Might lose some effectiveness, maybe?  If there's an advice number on or in the package somewhere, call it and ask them.

In my experience, the chemicals are less effective and the colour is very faint after a while. I don't think anything bad would happen, but I would just buy a new one anyway.

Actually, I remember reading Cosmo once (doesn't mean it's totally accurate) that if the developer and color remain seperate (obviously) and they remain tightly sealed, it should be good for quite a few years.

Color un-mixed lasts for 5 years,  it's less for liquid color which is about 3 years,  and  if it doesn't have a strong ammonia smell then toss it.

Well, you've got advice saying anything between one and five years. . . sounds like a definite case for asking the help line.
