I don't think there is one best flat iron. There are a lot of great flat irons. I personally love my Sedu 1"- lots of reviews at folica.com. Good heat protectants: Matrix Sleek.Look (I saw Suave Professionals has this now is it any good?) iron smoother (I stopped using it because I didnt like the spray because it made my hair wet and it has alcohol in it, Biosilk (also has alcohol but it doesn't seem to be drying out my hair), Tigi fashionista smooth and shine, garnier fructis serum, pureology shine max, aveda light elements smoothing fluid, and that's all I can think of now.

Type: 3c/4a Natural
Current Length: 6"
Goal: Healthy, tip of nose /neck/shoulder length hair.

try a flat iron called 'GHD' they are the leading brand here in the uk and my hair is 100% nappy and it straightened my hair beyond belief.

i think its the best becos it is Ceramic plated doesnt rip your hair or dry it out and 'GHD' have the ultimate in heat protectants i just wish more black people knew about it as the steel and copper ones are no good for your hair in my opinion i have so many i now LOVE my ghd u can buy it online i am sure it is expensive but its the best all the celebrities use it here.

good luck
