I've only put pretipped hair into the shrinkie and then shrunk it down and rolled to secure it. I've read about other people using bulk hair and just kind of putting it up into the shrinkie(after you've already put the tube on the natural hair, of course!) Do you guys do that alot? If so, how do you go about doing that b/c as we all know pretipping ourselves sucks and pretipped hair you buy is so expensive! Help!

Also, I really don't have any expensive with bulk hair. I just buy pretipped, or buy it on the weft and cut it off and tip it myself.

I think that's pretty much what we all do. Once you start buying pretipped hair, it almost nullifies the benefits of DIYing because it gets so expensive.

I was pretipping some synth the other night and did this: i took a hunk of bulk hair - 20" long, a hunk about the thickness of my finger - spread out the ends on a piece of tile, took my cheapie latex (not Proclaim - something called Natty that the bss lady gave me) which is quite watery, squeezed it thickly on the ends of the hair, and spread it around with the end of the bottle. Then I used the blow dryer to speed up the 'curing' time, and when the latex was nearly dried and thickened, just pulled pieces apart, rolled them, and that was it. I tipped a whole 4 oz pony in 1.5 hours - maybe 45 tips.
I made them pretty big - big enough to stuff into a shrinkie.

It's the making each tip individually that takes so long - this made it go pretty quickly.

Ya know, that's just about what I do! I cut about 2 in. off the weft and lay it down flat on wax paper, squirt some of Aleen's taky glue and then take a tongue depressor and rub it through the last inch, then put some liquid gold over it and do the same. Then flip it over do the same. I lay out about 5 of those and then roll them. I do like that fact that my tips are larger than the pretipped ones I buy, but, it's still time consuming. Do you charge for pretipping?

Syren, do you do hair for a living? Or just for your own pleasure??!! That's my problem, I'd just rather charge my client more for the pretipped, but I want fatter tips. But, not those weird nail-shaped ones.

WTG, Chris! With the hair still layed out flat, you can drizzle the Liquid Gold over the ends and spread it with a popsicle stick and not have to mess with the gunky brush. The LG coating has kept this last shrinkie install going strong and steady at 6 weeks now.

Thanks, Amm, but do you ever just take the bulk synth hair(which I've never used, but am still waiting for!), and just take enough to fit up the shrinkie, and then... shrink?

LOL! Not for a living - it's just an obsession given that my own hair is so disappointing!

In your case, sure...ordering the pretipped is the only way. Otherwise, you would have no life. It would be spent pretipping hair.

The weird nail shaped tips are for fusion - they don't fit in shrinkies unless you cut off the wings on the sides...and then you have the problem of the glue melting under the shrinkie, sort of defeating the purpose of shrinkies entirely. But do you find those shoelace tipped strands shed alot? That's bad!

Our quest continues.

EXACTLY!!!!! IT'S TAKING OVER MY LIFE!!!!!!I don't have time for that @%$#@!!! It's just hard for me to find the pretipped that I like. Which is a nice plump end with a decent amount of hair it it. What I keep getting , the end is so small that the shrinkie is huge in comparison!! I have never used nor played with the nail-tipped ones, just saw it online and know it wasn't for me.

Chris,

With bulk hair, you still pretip.  The purpose of pretipping is so all of the extension hair stays together and doesn't come out of the shrinkie bit by bit.   I don't have firsthand experience because I don't use shrinkies, but that's the basic idea.  Caution though, bulk hair is a little more difficult to work with.  Hair goes everywhere.   With wefts the hair stays in one place until you cut it off.  If the pretips you buy are too small, maybe you could put 2 in the shrinkie instead of just one.

The round are normal kind that just go straight up. The nail kind have this weird nail shaped tip that i guess is just used for like fusion, not microlinks or extendtubes. They're pretty wide.

Hey Bird, that's a good idea to just maybe stick in two inside one shrinkie. Thanks!

The bulk PH hair that i just got, it's long, so, i guess I'll just cut it in half and pretipp it. I don't mind since it's for me! Thanks for your input!

Are you using microlinks? i think I remember seeing people saying to just cut the sides of the tip to make it skinnier, does that make sense? That's what I would do if I accidentally ordered the nail tip one.And then just push it up there. just experiment how much you need to cut off for it to fit right in the link with still a little room for the natural hair to go in. I hope that helps, let me know what happens!

Not sure the width of their nail hair but I've taken Cinderella hair before, tapped it under a warm fusion wand (this is where multi-temp wands come in handy) and then rolled it into a stick tip. You may need to trim down the glue tip to make it smaller. I have had much better success when trimming it up after it's been heated and rolled up.
