I'd like your feedback on dark reds. I'm naturally dark brunette but I like dark red hair rather than a lighter carroty/coppery color. Right now I have highlighted brown hair and I'd like to go a very dark red (that's like cherry/auburn) and not on burgundy/plum/purple side nor do I have to resort to bleach.
I'm curious about Hydrience's shades: Ruby Twilight (Intense Dark Red), Hibscus (Dark Red), Scarlet Shimmer (lighter dark red), and Garnier's 100% Intense Auburn.
Will it look funny on top of my lighter highlights (caramelish color)? Your advice'd be appreciated!
To see a pic of hair color I'd like to achieve, see below and check out the Japanese woman's hair color. That's what I'd like...or at least pretty close enough.

I loved Hydrience Ruby Twilight, but my hair is probably lighter than yours, with no highlights, so I can't help much in how it'll turn out for you. My guess would be that it might turn a bright red on the highlights and a darker red elsewhere. It really wasn't meant to go on light hair, so the highlights might be a problem.
More awesome than a manatee!

To be on the safe side, you should get some brown demipermanent color at Sally's. That way, if the highlights come out neon-bright, you can put the brown over them for a few minutes to tone them down.
Just looking for a few good hair slaves - is that too much to ask?

We are just alike, original color = dark brown, present color = caramel highlights, color desired = intense dark red.
I go back and forth from reds to brunette with caramel highlights. The above advice is exactly right, your highlights will come out a more intense red color, which can be toned down with a demi-brown.
I prefer to use L'Oreal Feria because on brunette hair, they seem to come out more intense. I switch back and forth from Feria R68 Ruby Rush, rich auburn true red (my favorite intense red); to Preference 4R, dark auburn. I go to the preference dark auburn color when I don't want to dye my roots every month.
Goodluck and have fun as a redhead!
P.S. Let me know how the Garnier Products work out for you. Oh, oh, oh! When I'm using Feria Ruby Rush for months at a time, I use Matrix Biolage Earth Tones Conditioner in Real Red to keep the color fresh. It's really great.
**Hair type: 2a, which is wavy and fine.
**Color: Naturally dark brown, currently dyed reddish brown.
**Length: below shoulder length

Oh yeah! I love how that conditioner comes in various shades for the different types of redheads out there!

Thanks so much for your detailed experience! I'm glad to hear the red shade worked out well for you using Feria Ruby Rush. I was thinking about that, too, but I forgot to add it to the list. Did it work atop caramel highlights? The box said not to use it over highlighted or previously colored hair. I wasn't sure if I should follow that advice since my hair's already colored and highlighted? I already have Garnier 100% Intense Auburn at home but haven't used it yet. I don't mind slight brighter red strands on the rest of hair where the highlights are. I love the look of funky redhead.

If you put the Feria all over your head (on highlights too), the highlights will be noticeable still, but redder than the rest of your head. The only time that would bother me if my highlights have grown out farther than an inch, and they wouldn't come from my roots. In that case, I would selectively color my highlights with a deep brown to neutralize the red. In fact, I'm thinking of going back to ruby rush soon because I love red red. Too bad I paid $45 for partial caramel highlights last month. Hum.....decisions decisions.....
Goodluck, let me know how it goes! Don't forget a strand test because the garnier may not give you the red you're looking for, then you'd want to make it more intense and color your hair again, and that would be more damaging to your hair.

Hehe. It's so hard to stick to one decision or even one color for a long period of time. I'm like that. I like change. But I know it's very damaging to hair. Maybe you could enjoy your nice highlights for few more months? Till fall rolls around? I'm thinking of holding off dyeing my hair red till fall but dye my hair all over brown with a demi as you guys mentioned so there would be no highlights showing. You have me convinced! I want really intense dark red and I guess Ruby Rush is probably what I'm seeking all along. I did hear that Intense Auburn by Garnier turned out darker than the model on the cover (not surprising!). Check out ruby rush on this model's hair...wow! So red!

I wasn't able to pick up the image you posted with the models red hair. Darn. I don't know if you're interested, but I put together an album of my hair colors if you want to check it out. Thought it might help you see what the Feria's look like on dark brunette hair!
