QuoteReplyTopic: Hair Care Routine before dye? Posted: July 01 2005 at 12:05pm
What is your hair care routine before do-it-yourself coloring? I've heard not to wash your hair for a couple of days, and do a heavy conditioning. BUT, wouldn't the heavy conditioners keep the dye from penetrating the cuticle to deposit the color?
Another theory I've heard is to clarify and then use no styling products or conditioners for a few days. It's hard for me to stand my hair without the use of conditioner or products. But I could do this if it would help my hair dye work better.
Any thoughts or suggestions? What do you do?
**Hair type: 2a, which is wavy and fine.

I like to do a deep condition a day before. As you probably already know, your hair should not be too oily, but you should also never wash the day of the color. Basically a day's worth of oil is sufficient. plus many stylists advise using a ph balanced rinse/conditioner before you color. You can find this at Sally's, they usually even sell it in little bottles. This just optimizes color and ensures that it is "even", or something along this lines. I think this is probably best for those gals with virgin hair because most of us don't get our length touched up anyways when we do our roots. I have also heard of people using this post-color to stop the oxidation process, but you might want to check with a professional to see if that is even neccesary.
