I am a professional and work in a very conservative company (suit. tie and clean shaven). I have decided to let my hair grow with the goal of letting it reach my hips. When I am not at work, I would like to wear it like "Nell" of "Allie McBeal". I am looking for suggestions on styling it for the work place as it gets long. I have to find styles that will keep is off my face and looking like your typical chemical engineer (at least from the fornt)

Hello,

I work in a software development environment (Germany, Munich). The requests for suit, tie and clean shaven are not so strong. Some people like it, other not. I put my hair into a ponytail and it seems to work, I get no comments about my hair. It looks longer then shoulder length if I wear it open. From former male aquaintances I know that they hided their hair under a wig.

In a former environment I got serious conflicts because of my long hair (research institute for applied knowledge processing). At universities noone takes care how the hair is. In a bank or insurance company in Germany it is difficult for males to wear long hair.

I think it depends sometimes from the individual characteristics of the boss or the the big boss if long hair is allowed or not, but the worth of an employee is also measured how much he does for the company or how important he is. The problem is that sometimes not all representatives of a firm see this.

I wish you good luck with your hair growing but unfortunately I know not very much about styling a long male hair in a professional environment, if it appears it is usually put into a ponytail. Suit and tie doesn`t contradict long hair in general, I have seen it.

Wolfgang,

Thanks for the reply. The climate for tolerating long hair varies in my company by both location and job. Since I no longer manage the R&D, the leadership is more tolerant. Right now my hair is not quite shoulder length. I can pull it back into a ponytail but it is a pretty wimpy one. When I wear it loose, it is is full. But I really want to allow it to get very long. Will let you know how it goes. Hopefully others will have suggestions

Hello.

If you haven`t been there before, you may also wish to visit Victor`s Men`s Long Hair Site at http://the-light.com/mens/longhair.html. There is a message board there as well as other helpful tips. There are even a few pictures of men with various hairstyles.

My husband holds the same type of professional position that you do. He works with someone that has hair down to his waist, and it looks fantastic on him. His hair is always clean, and pulled straight back into a "low" ponytail. He lets it down when he gets in his car to leave the parking lot. If you have that really shiny greasy thing going on, then you risk the "mafia-look", lol, but other wise, let it grow, let it grow. I have waist length hair, like Nell`s and I love it, and model "hair". I have had a blast with it. Fallen Angel :)
Have a great day!! Angel :)

Thank you, you are certainly an Angel. I have discovered that long hair invokes negative reactions in most men and about a 50:50 split of strong negative to strong positive reactions is women. Right now, mine is only mid-back length but it is getting longer all the time. I go to the hair stylist every 4-5 weeks and really try to keep that soft flowing look.
