QuoteReplyTopic: Tried to dye my hair darker..please help! Posted: July 14 2005 at 11:10am
Hi all- I tried to dye my hair a few shades darker which I have done before, but this time my roots are still not too dark (which is fine) but my hair- away from the roots- is like a shoe polish black i guess because I have done this before. I didnt even think it would do this! SO I am wondering if anyone has any advice to take some of the color from the hair off? not the roots though
I looked on the articles on this site and it said one of the possibilities was to use Hot extra virgin olive oil but has anyone heard of this? hot oil? sounds dangerous...it was a semi permanent color said to last 28 shampoos so if I shampoo my hair 20 times in a row tonight do you think it will take some of the black out?? Thanks for your help..I have a weddding on saturday for a friend so I dont want to look foolish..thanks again.

When you redye your previously dyed hair, the dye builds up on the ends and the roots look lighter.
What you need to do is remove the color with Colorfix, which can be purchased at Sally's. I also recommend that you buy a protein filler to counteract the porosity of your damaged hair. This will allow the dye to take normally. You'll also want to get demipermanent color while you're there. I suggest a color a couple of shades lighter than what you're looking for. You can always go darker later, much easier than taking it back if it's too dark.
Pick up a tint brush. From now on you will be touching up only your roots and never using permanent color on any hair more than once.
This is going to be a big, scary project. You might want to have a professional do it.
I suggest you get a wig for Saturday.
Just looking for a few good hair slaves - is that too much to ask?

eKatherine, I believe she said that this was not permanent dye...it's a
semi. So, maybe she can have some suggestions to get some of the
color out before the 24 shampoos it would normally take?
If you're looking for less drastic measures (which you seem to be by
mentioning the olive oil treatment), then I would suggest Olive Oil, or
Head & Shoulders Shampoo. Both tend to strip some of the
color out.
Also, a trim might help. I had a similar problem to yours
and my ends were the blackest. I chopped off an inch
or two from the bottom and got my layers touched up, and it made my
overall hair appear much less dark. My roots are still fairly
light, but you can get a semi and just touch up the roots, or leave
them be...depends how long the roots are.
Hope this helped, good luck!

Semipermanent dyes contain the same lighteners that permanent ones do, just in lesser quantities to help fix the dye to the hair shaft. So if you redye repeatedly your hair may become porous, just as if you had used permanent dyes, exactly as described.
Most home remedies for hair color removal are extremely harsh on the hair and very limited in their effectiveness, so I don't recommend them. Considering how dark the dye was when the post was written, it's unlikely there's anything someone could do at home to bring it up where she wants. Except, of course, that the color on the roots will probably become lighter, as they are less porous.
There is a real possibility that she could permanently damage her hair without significantly fading the dye.
I stand by my answer. In fact, now it's too late to have a pro fix it for Saturday. The only solution right now is wig shopping.
