QuoteReplyTopic: has anyone tryed a protein treatment? Posted: July 18 2005 at 9:14am
I was just wondering if a protein treatment really works for your hair. I know some salons offer it i was also wondering it helps your hair condition if its thin.

Protein treatments can make your hair look and feel nicer, but they don't actually repair anything, regardless of what their advertising may say. Be careful not to use them too often, or they can build up and cause more of the same problem you were hoping they would eliminate.
Just looking for a few good hair slaves - is that too much to ask?

Protein is great for making your hair softer and look more healthy. It does weigh your hair down...so I would be a bit wary if you were plannind to do it alot since you metnioned that you have fine hair!

Protein treatments are not only great, but necessary if you use heat on your hair. Protein treatments help buffer the damage cause by the use of heat and chemicall products. I have used Sebastian 2+1 which is great, but really expensive. You can find it on ebay though for much less, and you can even find it in individual packages for one time treatments instead of buying a whole bottle. Also Joico K-pak reconstructor is very good and a favorite among stylists. And last but not least Redken extreme deep fuel also works wonders. Contrary to what people think, protein treatments will not make your hair feel softer. They are not designed for that. As I said before they help your hair recover from the abuse we put it through. So deep condition after the treatment and you won't belive the results. Use a clarifying shampoo at least once a month or every two weeks to get rid of build up. Paul Mitchell shampoo two or Redken hair cleansing creme are exellent. The paul mitchell one is cheaper and it works great. Stay away from drugstore brand clarifying shampoos, they are really bad for your hair, and contain carcinogens, as well as ingredients that cause premature wrinkles.
Hope this helps.

Culygirl- i am black but i would reccommend using Lamaur's bone marrow- it can be purchased at sally's beauty supply for like 5 or 6 dollars. It has worked wonders on my hair even though i'm sure that mine is much thicker than yours. Another alternative is using cholesterol. Hope this helps.

You can buy them at any Trade Secret beauty supply, or you can find them on ebay or any online beauty supply (Diamondbeauty.com, Losangelesbeauty.com, drugstore.com, Metrobeauty.com etc). They run different prices. Sebastian 2+1 is about $48, but I have bought it on ebay for $28 including the shipping. Joico K-Pak Reconstructor comes in different sizes, the prices range between $16, and $29 dollars. Redken extreme deep fuel comes in a box conataining 5 individual treatments and it is about $15. Joico K-Pak has been rated #1 by stylists I believe 4 years in a row. I have the Sebastian 2+1 and it works great. I would like to try the Joico thought. So when I run out I will be buying a bottle.
You want to go with good quality name brand ones. What most people don't know is that protein treatments need to have a certain molecular weight for the hair to be able to absorb it. Otherwise all it does is coat the hair, giving you an ilusion that is working, but in reality is just sitting on top of the hair shaft. You do get what you pay for, so if you are going to try it, invest in a good one.
Oh I am sure the ladies at Sally's recommend it, just like they highly recommend the Jilbere flat iron which is like lighting a match to your hair. At the begining everybodey loves them, and two weeks later they are crying about how fried their hair is. Trust me, I manage a retail store for one of the largest companies in the country. Sales people don't always now what they are talking about. Next time you are in the store, ask them why the product is so good. See if they can come up with a logical as well as technical answer. If they now what they are talking about they will explain to you the product formulation, what the different ingredients are and why they are good for your hair. For example did you know Cholesterol is full of carcinogens, and that the waxes in it are not low melting waxes, so they clog hair follicles and cause brakage. Ask them if they now what the different chemicals are supposed to do.
I walked into a beauty supply not too long ago, I usually just play along and let them think I don't know anything, and that I believe everything they are saying just so they will live me alone. This lady has worked for many of the major beauty companies; Loreal, Sebastian you name it. She has been doing this for like 15 years. Still her knowledge comes from the training that the sales reps provide. She really did not have much chemistry knowlege. Or any idea about what the different ingredients are. For example if you ask them what is alcohol Denat and what is it for, they have no idea. So you see, most of their knowledge comes from hear say. "Oh alot of customers buy it, and they love it". Well I'll tell you what I Manage a store for the largest retailer of pet supplies in the USA. A ton of my customers buy Eukanuba dog food and swear by it. Mind you this food is almost $40 a bag, and it is advertised by the manufacturer as a super premium food. I walk by the aisles and listen to other customer rave about what a wonderfull food this is, and how it is the number one. And based on the price it should be. However if you know anything about ingredients and at least a little about chemistry, when you turn the bag around you will realize that you can get a much better food for about $15 less. Now these are my vendors and I won't display here what is wrong with the food. But lets just say that just because alot of people recommend something doesn't mean they really know about the product. I make sure that at least at my store, my associates know what they are talking about when selling to a customer. I role play with them, and when they recommend a food to me as they would to one of my customers I make them tell me why. If they don't know, then I'll personally train them, so they won't missinform my customers.
I'll even give you a better example. The number one selling food for dogs is Pedigree. You will be surprise how many customers drop their jaw when I tell them that the food is a low quality brand, or what is know in the pet business as a grocery brand. They thought that Pedigree was suppossed to be the best food, because they watch so many comercials about it, and because that is what all their neighbors feed their dogs, and they swear by it. Well when they approach me, is usually because the dog is having skin problems and severe shedding not to mention a very dry and dull coat. The first thing I ask them is what kind of food do you feed him. The answers is 99% of the time "Pedigree", and the other one % is another grocery brand "puppy chow" or kibbles and bits. So I tell them, I could sell you that shampoo but that won't solve your problem. You either switch his food or buy a skin and coat supplement, which you will have to keep buying as long as you use that food. So you see, it takes alot more knowledge than you think to recomend a product. Luckily I was a Biology major in college and had to take plenty of chemistry, I don't know as much as ekatherine (I believe she is a chemistry major) but I know just enough to shut down sales people when they are trying to B.S me. If there is one thing other than pet supplies that I know about is hair products. Believe many of them seem to work but are not neccesarily the best. Your hair is your most important accesory, don't take chances with it, use only the best. And do your own reseach about the ingredients themselves, don't just go by sales people tell you. After all, they are there to sell. Remember You can grab 10 people and give them the same ingredients to make a cake, and each one of them will come up with a different cake. Is also alot more than just mixing ingredients. There is a certain technology to it as well.
I don't mean to lecture you, I just like for people to know the facts.
Ty Sharyg11, I appreciate the info. You make a valid point and i try hard to look at ingredients prior to making all purchases. My hair (extremely curly/tightly coiled) works great with the lamaur's bone marrow and the cholesterol. So i think i will keep them- you do however make a valid point and the cholesterol as well as a few dominican conditioners that i occassionally use are the only products that i use with bad ingredients in them that agree with my hair. The rest of my shampoos , conditioners and oils are all natural. I have some expensive products on hand as well as some cheapies. I try very hard to use the right things so that they agree with my hair. if my hair doesn't like it or stops working well with it , the product goes in the trash.

OMG, I'm dominican lol. I mean I was borned in NY but my parents are from the DR and I lived there for 10 years. How funny that is the dominican products that have the bad ingredients. Hey if you like domincan products you should try Salerm 21 techniques silk protein. (the one in the squeeze tube not the bottle). It is actually from Spain but dominicans love it, and is high selling product there. It works wonders for curly frizzie hair. You can find it at justbeautyproducts.com or Metrobeauty.com, or any salon or beauty supply that carries salerm. You put it on before blow drying or using hair rollers and it is the best leave in ever. Give it a try, you'll love it.
cool- thanks again- i will give the Salerm 21 a try. Glad to know that you are dominican so if i have any questions- i'll be sure to ask you. I just picked up the Rivas Silcon Mix shampoo and conditioner. thanks for the links- i usually make my purchase at www.sickbay.biz Great prices there.

I'm Mitch and I've been a hairstylist for 15 years and a protein treatment really works if done correctly. You can definitely see a difference in the condition of your hair. As for thin hair a protein treatment will make your hair look more healthy and sometimes make thin hair have more thickness but you will definitely have more body and volume.
You can also buy the protein treatment and do it yourself that's what I do. Once a month I do a protein treatment myself on myself it's very easy to do. You can first try a hot oil treatment and practice with that first you can use Vo5 hot oil treatment or you can get a better one sally's beauty supply carries many different kinds of treatments. Just read the instructions carefully on the treatment. If you have any questions you would like to ask me you can private messageme here or email me at: customonegtr@rock.com Good luck with your hair.
