I really need help. I have dyed my hair for almost 15 years myself. Then about 2 years ago I stopped dying it because I wanted to go back to my natural hair color which is black. I am going to have surgery in one month and I wanted my hair a little lighter so I dyed it tonite. The roots came out fine but my hair about 3 inches after the roots are still black...the color did not take! Can anyone please please help me? This is the first time this has happened?

Jean: I used Nice 'n' Easy by Clairol. My friend told me that the roots took the color because it is "new growth" but the rest is "old" hair. I've done it before and it took fine. Could it the medications that I take? Well, I really don't know, I dyed by hair black again.

How long is your hair?  It may be that there is still old dye in the lengths, and color does not lift color.  Alternatively, your hair may have become more resistant to dye in the last couple years.  Roots always lift better than the rest of your hair, mostly because the heat from your scalp helps the dye lift more pigment.

If you decide you don't like black in the future, you will first need to use a color stripper (such as ColorFix) to remove the black dye.  Then, depending how light you want to go, you'd need dye with either 20 or 30 volume developer.  Most box dyes such as Nice n Easy only use 20 volume, which may not be strong enough for dark hair, especially if you want to lift more than two levels.

If your redye porous hair the hair will be another color or colors than the dye, if you redye hair that isn't porous it will be the color of the dye.Maybe it was the medications.
