Hi everyone. Love all your hair advice and solutions. Great site. I have a question. I am going to a dominican hair salon for the first time tomorrow. Someone told me to get a blow out and roller set. I usually do roller set my hair. My hair is just below my ears on the sides, half way to my chin and to the back of my neck in the back, about 3-4 " long on top.  Is there anything I should prepare for.  I need a touch-up but trying to stretch it out & I heard they can have your hair look great with the blow out. But I am curious about how it is done. Roller set then they use the blower or vice-versa. Confused about this.  I  was told it was walk in only no appts & they open at 10am so I plan to be at the door by 9:30am.  It is called Luisa's in Silver Spring, MD.

Any advice appreciated.

It really is a roller set , then blow out.  If you have a decent stylist, you should have very nice results.  A word of warning though... Some Dominican Salons workers will automatically tell you that you need a touch up.  Having a lot of new growth and stretching is fine, but can also place a lot of stress on the hair where the 2 textures meet.  They know this so they may try to tell you to do a touch up.  It's just good to be prepared if they do try to persuade you.  Also, if you want straighter hair at roots with out a touch up, they will use a very hot blowdryer.

im not sure if i am too late [you may be at the salon], but if you have coarse hair, a blow out is not for you...coarse hair is the most fragile of black hari types [or any for that matter] and the extreme heat they use is not ideal if you are trying to minimize damage...

i am a natural press [coarse-n-wavy]...sometimes i wash, condition, and moisturize without  pressing [my hair is pretty but it is too coarse for a blowout it may look good but it is damaging] plus the heat is put directly on the hair...

if you want to stretch the relaxer, find a hair CARE salon and ask them to wash, condition, and moisturize you and then to press your roots with a small CERAMIC iron...

Don't get me wrong I am sure that ceramic irons are great (haven't tried one yet but intend to purchase one soon).  I have had this roller set and blowout done for years and it works great.  I have also seen done successfully on many different hair types.  I think that Dominican Salons are some of the best for caring for relaxed hair, even if they are not up on the latest ceramic iron trend (I am sure it is only a matter of time and of ceramic iron prices comind down a bit).   Also, while they are better for the hair, if abused or if too hot they too can ravage your hair.

Ok it went well. asked about a touch up I declined. I do know I am almost due for one.  I heard that they are not the best for touch-ups..true or false?? I heard they aree great for style.

I had a conditioning treatment under the dryer then roler set. I found the blow-out dryer too hot for me so the stylist just went light on me with the heat.  I was very satisfied with the style and no irons were used on my hair she used the brush and blowdryer after she took the rollers out. My hair has lots of body & movement. Not weighed down with anything.

Great.  Glad it went well.  Truthfully, I have been to several different Dominican Salons (both in NYC and when I moved away).  The technique is basically the same.  They are not infallable but pretty good for maintenance.

I have been going to Spanish salons since I was 9 (having my hair relaxed, wash n set, deep conditioner, hot oil treatments, cut/trimmed).  They are very good at relaxing different hair types (3's & 4's) and also at blowing natural hair straight.  I have never heard that they are not good for touch ups.  If anything, my experience has been the exact opposite (mainly go to salon for relaxer because I do not trust myself). But, if you prefer to self relax or if you have another person who does for you and have seen good results then you may want to stick with that.

On the other hand, I would not necessarily recommend a Dominican Salon to someone who wants to wear their hair natural (curly or in an afro, twists, etc) as that is not necessarily their specialty.  I'm not saying that it's impossible to find a Dominican salon that can can do twists, braids, etc..  It just seems that most people go to these shops for straight styles and that they are particularly good with straight styles.

I went to a Dominican hairdresser when i was 15
and had a bad experience ,, i then went a dominican
salon and lost most of my hair becuz of the
hairdressers ignorance,, and mistreatment of my
hair,, she would touch up the same relaxed hair over
and over again till my hair broke up at nearly the root
and i couldnteven communicate with her,, i thought
she was my only option becuz im of mixed race and i
wrongly assumed a black hairdresser would ruin my
hair and that a white hairdresser would have no
clue,, i now have myhair blown out by a russian and
sometime have my extensions done by a black
hairdresser and i dont think ill ever be able to trust a
dominican salonist again becuz i lost my hair twice
with 2 different dominican salonists,, i ojust dont
think that she really gave a crap about my hair,, she
only wanted her 40 bucks for the touchups and
ishould have known better becuz her own hair
looked awful LOL!!! anyway be careful who u let
touch ur hair,, i do my own relaxers now and myhair
has grown dramatically since i began this a little over
a year ago.............
Hair type: 3b some c?, fine strands, last relaxer sept 05, never again!!! current :ap length on sides,,nearly bsl in back, damn those old frazzled ends! I am hair OBSESSED

Cookiesnkream -

I am sorry you had a bad experience at the Dominican hairdresser you went to.  The only place relaxer should go is the roots.  It sounds like she had no business doing hair for a living.

It's true that not all hairdressers are equal, regardless of ethnicity.  Some just know & care more about hair and hair health than others.  My cousin (3B relaxed) goes to a Korean place to get blowouts when she is pressed for time.  She thought they would turn her away but they did a great job and she's been back several times since. Too funny.
