Hair strands stick up after gelling

Before, i used to gel my hair and every strand would be in place but now when i gel my hair, strands tend to stick up and its really annoying.. i try to add just a little more gel to that spot but no use so i just tuck that strand under the rest.. same with my bangs, i gel them up a little so they dont lay on my forehead but they still come down no matter the amount of gel.. its getting annoying now and more strands do it.. whats the solution?
