What is your favorite updo to wear on yourself for hair that is 3 inches or so shorter than bsl?  (For those of you with super long hair, do you remember back to those days?   )

I've been doing french twists but they start to not look so nice.  The hair behind my ears bags out in a way that it didn't do when it was a little shorter, and from one side I start to have a big enough roll back there to make me look like Nefertiti (I'm all for old fashioned, but maybe not that old!).  It's still too short to stay in a bun without tons of time and bobby pins, and french braiding takes too long in the mornings, yet I still need something to get it off my neck in this heat!   Even the plain old ponytail can be annoyingly hot in this humidity.

Any ideas are welcome, and if you don't know, just share your favorite updo of any length for fun!

I relied on claw clips. Especially during really hot weather, it felt much better than a low pony. Twisted my hair into a half-bun or whatever I could manage at the time, then clipped it up with a 3-inch claw. It stayed comfortably most of the day.

Hi Susan!

When my hair was the length you describe, I usually wore it loose or in a ponytail.  Very occasionally, in a braid.

I see lots of messy fan-tail claw-clip buns these days.  That could work.  Or how about braided pigtails?

Anais:  I tried that - even tried again last night after you suggested it - I don't know what I'm doing wrong but its just not working for some reason.  I have a 3 inch claw and it doesn't fit around the whole lump of hair, and when I stick it though what it fits over, I get 6 inch long pieces hanging out in every direction.  I don't know what I'm doing wrong...maybe my claw has too loose of a spring or something.  The messy way would work okay, but since I need to wear it to work, I'd prefer it to be neater.  When I coil it into a bun, the ends don't really fit back under the bun very well (not long enough), maybe that's my problem. How did you twist and clip yours exactly to get it to work?

Hi Dave!  Yes, it looks like I may have to just settle for the ponytails and braids and deal with the heat until it gets long enough to wrap around itself better.  I like braided pigtails, I wear it to sleep that way, but I don't know about going to work with them...I feel like I'm going to look funny wearing pigtails to work at 30!  On the weekend, definitely!

Hi Susan!
I have very thick hair, and some claws will not hold all of my hair.  I've broken many, many claws from trying to fit them over my hair, and watching them split in half, lol.
I really like Scunci for hair toys.

This one has like a rubber coating on the inside of the clip so that it grips your hair (damage-free of course).
Conair also makes clips like these specifically for thick hair.
Also, have you tried:  Instead of twisting your hair at the base and clipping it, just making a very low pony tail, then, grab the pony by the end of your hair and pul it upward over the top of your head, and clipping it there somewhere in the middle??  Or twisting it while it's held at the base by the pony?  Hope that made sense, it's hard to describe.
I have a few other suggestions for you!
The clip that you have now, since it won't fit around the whole girth of your hair, maybe a half-up-half-down style with the clip?  I used to do that often with my shoulder-length hair.  I liked to do it loose though...just brust the top of your hair backward, so there is not visible part, and take the claw clip and hold it above your right ear.  Open up the clip, and line up the back prong of the right side of the clip with the hair above your ear, while you take your left thumb, and line it up with the hair above your left ear, and pull both sides up, tuck your left side into the clip with your thumb, and adjust the clip as needed.  I hope that made sense as well!
Another suggestion is with these combs
or these barrettes you can pull your hair up on the sides above your ears.  The combs may be a bit more of a mature look than the barrettes, but the best way i have come to find to use the combs is to part your hair, either in the middle or on the side, depending on how you wear it, and then take one of the combs and flip it upside down so that the prongs of the comb are pointing toward the back of your head, but it is curved downward rather than upward.  Hold it over your right ear and grip the hair there with the comb, push diagonally upward and once it gets almost to the top of your head, flip it (still holding the hair inside it) so that the prongs are now facing downward, and push down on the comb to lock in the hair.  I wish I could explain it better, if you have questions, just ask.
My FAVORITE way to wear my thick hair with a professional look is SO easy but really nice looking.  I have wavy/curly hair, but this will work in anyone's hair as long as it isn't too fine.
Using a banana clip, like this one:
or this one:
you can do this either of two ways, either flip your head up side down (make sure your hair was brushed back with no part first), and place the open banana clip at where your scalp meets your neck, keeping it open, pull downward toward the ends of your hair (remember your head is upside down right now) and simultaneously flip your head back so that you are almost leaning backward, and pull the two sides of the clip together and clip at the top of your head.  You can do it again higher or lower depending on your taste.  If you prefer, you can also stand upright with brushed back hair, place the open banana clip under the back of your hair where your scalp meets your neck, and lean back so that gravity helps the hair get in the clip, and pull the clip upward around your hair, and then clip it shut.  If you find that pieces are sticking out on the side, you can either slick them into the clip, or bobby pin them.  But this style looks very very nice, especially for work!
Hope this all helped!  If you have any questions about how I explained something, please let me know!
Christine
PS - The bonus of the banana clip is that it makes your hair look longer because it essentially elongates the pony inside the clip!!
Hope you like!

Thanks for all of your ideas (yes, you do make sense!).  Is the banana clip back in style?  I haven't had one of those for 15 years so I guess it must be about time for it to come back, huh. They used to break easily and poke you in the back of the neck back then.  On the bottom one you showed it looks like they improved both of those features by improving the screw at the bottom and making it shorter...maybe I should try that again, and invest in some of the new claws.  I didn't know they were making no slip grip on the inside now.  Thanks again!

Hi Susan -

I think it also depends on whether the claw has tines that are "round" enough, to hold more hair. The claw also had a really strong spring... I got it from Claires, and it is their only hairtoy that ever worked for me in the past. I can load a picture if you like. It's 3-5 USD. My ends probably tucked well because of the thin tapered ends.

Best wishes

I do have a metal claw with round tines (smaller though).  I didn't realize tine shape could make a difference.  Yeah, I could be cursing myself with my love of the blunt cut.  I probably should have let it go earlier then blunted again when I could do more with it.  Thanks!
