HOW TO GET A GOOD TRIM

Here is my secret for a good trim, as I`ve had years of torture at the hands of well meaning stylists.

First, I never let a person with short hair cut my hair. Why, you ask? Short haired people don`t understand the commitment it takes. Most wish to have long hair and will tell you (`I`ve always wanted long hair`). The first thing they do is hack off way too much. I think its a subconscious act to make you look like them. As they say misery loves company.

Second, I always explain to the stylist that I am growing out my hair (Its now at my bra strap, go hair go) and that I want the bare minimum TRIMMED off. Explain its a trim not a CUT or a STYLE.

Third, a good stylist will ask and show you how much she`s about to trim off. I watch like a hawk and I ask to see how much she`s planning so that we both have the same amount in mind.

It may be a little *****y, it maybe a little obsessive, but the last time I didn`t do the above I ended up with 4 inches trimmed off and slightly layered as the stylist "thought" that`s what I meant by trimmed.

Good luck peoples and remember its your hair, don`t let a pushy stylist do what they want, if you feel uncomfortable don`t let them start and if you are unhappy complain and never go back!

Instead of trying to worry about a stylist I learned to trim my own. It makes it easier to have curly hair because not all the curls are the same length anyway. :)

But I do agree with what you said. My mom was a stylist a long time ago so I trust her to trim my hair. She knows I want it long plus she`s my mom and doesn`t want me mad at her. So, she would cut only what I want.

also, the best hairstylists i find r the guys, sorry to be sexist, but the gay guys just seem to know exactely what ur on about, and exactely HOW to do WHAT you want.

I say that all stylists are different. Instead of classifying the stylists, people need to concentrate more on getting what They want. That means if you have to write out a list of wants and don`t wants to give to a stylist then do so. If you have to bring a ruler do it. That hair belongs to you and if you say no they better take it for an answer and if they don`t then you take action.

If they ever cut way more than they were supposed to and do not make any effort to compensate you then you need to report them or the salon to any or all of these:

You do what you have to do to get what You want. If you let them get away with things then you are letting them victimize others too.

Well, your hair sounds like it`s really dry. You should go look for some olive oil to pre-treat it before shampooing a couple maybe three times a week at first to see if that improves the splits. You should use enough to make the length look wet, and leave it on for at least an hour. It may take two shampoos to get the oil out, but you`ll figure out what it takes from doing it. Also, your water may have a high mineral content. Try using a half vinegar/water solution during your final rinse in the shower. That`ll remove some of the buildup as well as reduce the pH of your hair, making it more manageable.

Probably the best way is to comb your hair all forward. Next part it in the middle. Pin up all the hair above the ear line with a clip. Now spritz the hair with a mister. Trim straight across the bottom in the front on both sides. 1/2 inch or less, just to get the damaged ends. Let down some more hair about an inch higher than the first line. Pin the rest back up. Spritz the ends and follow the first amount you trimmed as a guide. Repeat until you have all the hair down and it is even. I have trimmed a couple friends` hair for years (both can sit on their hair) and both say I am more concerned about cutting off too much than they are. But they won`t trust anyone else, and I have never had a complaint from either one. Plenty of thank yous though. Karonica, what is your goal? I hope it is waist length or longer.

Glad to hear you are planning to stay away from the scissor happy hairdresser. Remember they make their money cutting hair off your head, not growing it. besides their training focuses on cutting hair short, above the shoulders. They do not learn how to take care of long hair. So if you want your hair long, they are not much assistance. When you do decide to trim your own ends. Plan on giving yourself alot of time, do not rush it or let other things interfere. Lock the door, take the phone off the hook and take it slow. I`ll bet you do just fine.
