Hello all! I have a little problem and I was hoping you guys might be able to help me figure out what to do.

I started this whole saga out with virgin 7-8ish  blonde hair. I had dyed my hair for seven years before I opted to shave it all off and grow it back. Well, I did that. I was so proud! I loved my virgin hair...so of course, I had to dye it.

"Oh, I will just use a semi-perm dye (Natural Instincts Chestnut, pictured in avatar BTW)and it will wash out after a while," I told myself. When I figured out that wasn't going to happen as quickly as I'd liked it to have, I said "fudge it" and decided to bleach it. Big mistake. Insert crying, more bleaching, violet based toner, more crying and ultimately, an orangy, blondish yellow, and white damaged mess.  Went back to a dark red semi-perm color, which came out a bright and firey red. I kept it, as I was somewhat satisfied with that color.

Soon after this last coloring, the red dye began bleeding out very heavily every time I bathed. As a result, the hair faded very quickly, but still stayed a washed-out medium redish (almost pinkish) color (which is its current color). My hair has also suffered horrendous breakage. I still have long hair (a few inches past shoulder length), but it is not very soft, very prone to breakage and in need of some serious TLC. I have been conditioning like a madwoman and have even done an olive oil treatment do help boost my condition a little.

My roots are currently about 1 3/4 - 2 inches long. They are that same 7-8ish blond.

Classes are about to start again, and I am planning a trip to the salon sometime this week.  I don't want to walk into the salon  without an idea of what is feasable and what is probably purely fantasy (i.e. going back to my natural haircolor).

What would you all suggest I do?
Can I go back to blonde safely w/ a colorist's help? Should I get it colored regularly with a semi-perm and wait for the healthier growth to come in, then cut off the damaged ends?  Should I get a realllllly short haircut?

I am really lost on what I should have a colorist (or stylist) do!
Confused

(Ack! Sorry 'bout the length of this post!)

Hmmm pink hair eh. Well a salon should know what to do. You want to return to your normal blonde color with a colorist's help.

The reason that red is bleeding quickly from your hair is because of the bleaching you did on your hair that cuticle layer of the hair was blown open by the bleach and even thought the semi-permanent color has stained the cortex of that hair the cuticle layer is still open the color is just washing out of your hair and fading to a lighter and lighter pink.

A possible solution to return you to the close to the blonde you we're before the disaster would be to fill in with a gold filler then go in on the colored hair with a blonde demi-permanent haircolor close to your natural level and then a clear coat over that filler and color to close up those damaged cuticles to help preserve that color you just paid good money to have done. As for your roots they should be able to tone that to match the corrective color.

G'luck let us know how you make out.

Thanx, Claude! It's not really pink so much as a sickly, washed-out red w/ a pink tinge (in some lighting.)I really don't want to have to shave it again or end up with a chemical haircut! Dead

However, I am glad to hear it may be possible to get it really close to my natural color again.

Of course I will post about my experience and the end result.

Crossing my fingers!

I haven't seen a haircoloring disaster beyond repair yet but it does sound like that bleach really blew open the cuticle layer of your hair and it's probably still damaged and open maybe you left the bleach on too long? Be sure to deep condition it often.  I think they will fill your hair with gold and go in with a demi-permanent to stain that damaged cuticle layer then tone the roots and go over it with a clear coat to seal up that cuticle layer and add shine and preserve that color.

G'luck

Shaving your head shouldn't be an option.

I think the color in your picture is beautiful.  But I know how the reds are - they just don't stay in!  I went through something very similar.  I ended up cutting my hair off and I regret it to this day, although it is nearly shoulder length again.  So listen, don't cut your hair.  I'd say work with a great colorist who can bring you to a nice color using demi-perm (deposit only).  Yes, it may wash out rather quickly the first few times as your hair is porous, but with regular visits to the salon and frequent trims the situation will improve.  And you can save your hair!

Good luck!
