hey all,
i'm having a bit of a hair color fiasco. i had my hair colored at a salon
in may and made the mistake of telling the girl to dye it the color she
thought would suit me best. she picked a very very dark mahogany
brown, which she called "Chestnut". on top of my dark brown hair, it
looked very dark, and after a few washes, it turned into an ugly dark
brassy color. i stuck with it, because i didn't feel like torturing my hair any
more. all throughout the summer, my hair's been getting lighter and
redder and brassier. in an act of desperation, i went to Sally Beauty Supply
and bought a Feria Professional in Soft Dark Ash Brown. i mixed the dye
with the Feria activator and applied it to my hair. much to my dismay, the
color started to look burgundy on my scalp, and even on the application
gloves (even though the bottle said that the Ash color had blue tones).
now, i'm confused. my hair came out waaaaaay light at the roots and it
has a sickening dark red glow to it. I HATE RED! the whole point of
getting a dark ash brown was to neutralize the red! so what can i do now?
i am very close to grabbing a garnier 100% in blue black, but i don't want
to do black just yet. how can i fix this? all i want is a dark brown, ash
color with NO red. should i try another bottle of the Feria over this one?
or a demi? has anyone found a dark ash brown that takes away red
undertones? any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks!!!

Think of your color wheel and ignore what the colors call themselves (ash etc.). Things that call themselves ash can have different color bases (could be green, violet or blue - depending).  If you have hair that is too reddish, putting a blue based color on it makes purple, just like with paint.  If it wasn't feria, and your hair's too red, I'd tell you to try a brown color with a green base from Sally's (and test strand the heck out of it to make sure your roots or ends don't come out bad).  But I don't know Feria and I've heard that it is a different kind of chemical process than other dyes -so I don't know what dying over it will do.  I wouldn't recommend blue black.  It may still come out with a burgundy haze over what you have now, and it'll be a lot harder to get rid of if you don't like it.

Anyone else know?  Feria experts?

You can try washing it with dawn to fade it out, it works extremely well (just make sure to have plenty of deep conditioning products on hand). From there it will be easier to dye.

feria is a direct dye. it can not be removed with color fix, coloring over it will likely be as unsucessful. the only thing taht can truly remove the feria color is bleach. now i would not recommend this in your case. what i would do is:

go to your local Sally Beauty supple and get yourself some of the adrelle red-gold corrector plus (ask the girl at the counter where it is kept) and a tube of the wella colorcharms demi perm in clear (this has absolutely no color to it whatsoever. it will just make the hair shinier) and some of the activator lotion. the reason that you need the hair color in clear is that the adrelle needs activating lotion to be able to penetrate the hair, and you dont want to make the hair any darker or lighter, so you can just use the clear. hopefully this should take out the red. although im not sure how the adrelle will wokr in the Feria.
learn to love what you were born with
you can do anything if you set your mindto it (just dont try this with hair, that could turn out bad)

thanks for the advice guys! i washed with the dawn and the water kept
coming out burgundy, so i guess some of the dye was released. i went to
sally's and got that corrector and some clairol colorgloss in clear (they were
out of the wella) and put it on my head and under intense scrutiny of my
bathroom lights, the red sheen seems to be under control. i'll keep my
fingers crossed. oh, and the colorgloss made my hair very shiny - a definite
plus after all the abuse!

does anyone know how effective the colorgloss colors are? i'm thinking of
using the dark ash brown one to keep my hair looking good, since it's a
gentle demi. opinions?
