QuoteReplyTopic: Question for Gord...(to grow or not to grow?) Posted: July 12 2002 at 1:08pm
Hi Gord, I have a question... As a kid I had long blond hair. Then when I was a Senior in high-school I took the plunge and got it cut into a bob. I loved it and so did everyone else. Since then I`ve grown it out, cut it, grown it out, cut it, you get the picture right??! I know that you love long hair but I want to know exactly why you love long hair. And let me ask you this...do you EVER think someone looks better in short hair? I personally do think I look better in short hair, I`m not talking buzz cut mind you, but just above shoulders maybe. BUT I am trying to let mine grow, again, and it`s driving me nuts! I want long hair, I love long hair, but at the same time I want short hair, I love short hair. I`m in a mess. I ask you for advice please... It never fails that If I`m experiencing PMS it`s all I can do to keep from cutting my hair off. I do not know why, but this happens to me every single month of my life,lol...hormones...But then when I do cut it, oh yeah I`ll just LOVE it for about a week, then I`m like, "WHY oh WHY did I cut my hair?!". Am I just plain ol` wacky? I guess I want a fella`s opinion here most of all... And let me just put it like this... Say that I REALLY do look better, cuter, younger(I`m 35 BTW) in shorter hair... How the heck can I resist cutting if I know all this? BUT I don`t wanna cut it, I want long hair, I don`t know why but I just do!......
I know this is strange post, but I need advice or somethin`........:) Thanks always, Megan:)
You are not the first woman that I have known who experienced this... When my wife (41, BTW) has grown her hair, she experiences the same hormonally timed urge, and when she discussed it with her stylist, the stylist admitted that she is exactly the same way. The good news is that you get to do what you want, when you want.
Thanks David, I know that I`ve female friends who do this too, but I seem to take it to the extreme and drive my poor family nuts! It`s like a total obsession with me...Don`t know if that`s good or not, but that`s just me. But now come to think of it I was totally obsessed with my hair when I was a kid without those pesky hormones raging from month to month....oh well it`ll all work out, I`m gonna try and keep the scissors away for now:) Thanks for the support!
Megan:)

Hey Megan! I`ve been in the same situation as you are for a long time myself. At the beginning of last month I made a pact with myself that I was going to let my hair grow for a year. Then, after it`s long, if I still want it short again I`ll cut it. My hair right now is just below my neck. I`m wanting it about mid-back. I made my husband promise to talk me out of it if I try to get it cut. By the way, hiding the scissors is a good plan. ;)
Good Luck. Becky

Why don`t you keep it short since you already said that you look better with short hair. If you really did love long hair your PMS wouldn`t control your emotions toward that decision. ( something that Gord can`t talk about lol) I am pretty sure that Gord can`t even talk about that subjecttttttttt. lol
Do men really prefer long hair? Well I don`t know but what I do know is that during my period of being on the internet over the years I have had 20 marriage proposals, offers for trips, offers to pay 1,000 for a single strand of hair. hum lol Seriously it did happen. ( the guys were cute etc and all over the world) In real life I have had many men comment on my hair. Had some chase me to brush my hair. ( I call that harassement lol) I had one male at a dance that decided to sniff and try to snooze in my hair while we were dancing and I didn`t know who he was only his first name lol
Let me tell you for sure that was weird. I belong to the largest single club around that has over 6,000 members and I am one of the few that actually has long hair. When I dance with a man I can actually feel that he is touching my hair while I am dancing. Hum do men prefer long hair................

It`s hard to give you a short answer on this, so bear with me.
I`ve had a thing for women with long hair as long as I can remember. In seventh grade, I remember being devastated when a girl named Patti cut her hair from butt length to shoulder length. In college, I got a chance to interview Playmate of the Year Debra Jo Fondren for the school newspaper. And at Detroit Red Wings hockey games I occasionally get a closeup look at Anna Kournikova, who visits Joe Louis Arena to watch her boyfriend(?) Sergei Federov.
Long hair is sexy. I go against the grain of many women, who feel that once you reach a certain age you must hack it off. I feel long hair can make you look younger. In fact, I know dozens of women who have aged a dozen years when they cut their hair short. And I have spoken to dozens of disappointed husbands, boyfriends and former boyfriends of these women -- so I know I`m not alone.
I guess when I talk about hair on women, I think about the total package. Without long hair, I think, Alannis Morrisette would look plai. Laura San Giacomo loses much of her beauty. Julianne Moore would go from sexy to cute. And I shudder at the thought of Anna K with short hair.
If I can continue talking about celebrities, I was crushed when I saw the new hairstyles of Faith Hill, tennis player Mary Pierce, Crystal Bernard, Lauren Holly, Vanessa Marcil, model Kirsty Hume and even Kathie Lee Gifford.
Alicia Silverstone had some of the sexiest hair around when it was long. Janes Leeves of Frasier went from sexy to another woman with shorter hair when she got hers cut.Christa Miller of the Drew Carey show never had really long hair, but her short style looked greasy and boyish. I liked her with longer hair. I still dont know what Alyssa Milano was thinking when she went to those short bangs.
On the other side, Lara Flynn Boyle looks amazing with longer hair. Demi Moore has grown her hair out again and looks wonderful. Same with Celine Dion, even though I think hers are extensions. I love Meg Ryan with longer hair. Same with Jenny McCarthy.
On my list of pretty "shorter hair" women, I`d include Katie Couric and Ann Curry from the "Today Show," the redhead from SheDaisy, Julie Bowen of the TV show "Ed," Catherine Bell of "Jag" and Bonie Sommerville, who played the girlfriend of Ross in "Friends."
I`m on record several times over saying that Katie Couric has had the hair transformation of the 21st Century, meaning I like her hair a whole lot better now than I did when she was considered "perky" and "cute as a button."
Megan, I`m glad you`re taking your time on making the decision to cut your hair. So are a lot of other guys out here.
Hi Gord--I completely agree with your assessment of Alyssa Milano`s bangs...horrendous, really. And personally, I would add Halle Berry to the Short-haired and Fabulous list. I really think Halle pulled off what is often impossible for women: she looks 3,298,493 times more gorgeous with the pixie than she did with the puffier shoulder-length look of a few years back.

Thanks so much Gord for your help! I do love long hair and I am intending on letting mine grow, it just gets hard at times ya know?! My mother-in-law found an old picture of me and hubby dear, made when we were first married. I had super short hair and my kids liked to have flipped when they saw the pic. They couldn`t believe it was mommy and they did not like it at all! SO there ya go, no shorter hair for me, gonna let it grow-grow-grow:)
