Just saw a report on BBC America tonight about people who are refusing
to evacuate because they don't want to leave their pets. This whole
situation is so, so tragic.

A few of my clients are firefighters, they are there already and some of my stylist are getting ready to go-
tomorrow a few of them are going to volunteer at the red cross,
i cleaned out my closets and have tons of clothing and shoes to donate- its amazing the devestation and the way we all pull together- yeah we better be prepared, the govt wont do a thing to help fast!

New Orleans Animal Rescue in Peril. Help urgently required!
Contact: Dana Nesbitt (President) Humane Society, LA Cell:
901 268 4610 Email:humaneLA@cs.com
NEW ORLEANS, SEP 8, 2005. Despite the heroic efforts of
volunteers and animal groups from both Louisiana and around
the country, time is running out for the animals trapped in New
Orleans, after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Help is
desperately required to rescue animals trapped in the flooded
ruins of New Orleans or roaming the streets in hungry packs.
Help is also urgently required to help care for the hundreds of
animals rescued and located in shelters with no power or
running water. Here's how you can help!
-BOAT OWNERS! Boats are urgently needed. Flat bottomed
boats, canoes, anything that can be used to travel around the
flooded streets of New Orleans, and which is big enough to
hold rescued animals. You must be able to transport the boat to
the Louisiana SPCA http://www.la-spca.org/ shelter
established at 9093 St. Landry Rd., Gonzales, LA 70737.
HSUS volunteer Linda Nealon can be contacted at Gonzales
on (225) 647 0712, but that line is very busy. Bring a boat and it
WILL be used.
-ANIMAL CARE AND CONTROL PROFESSIONALS. Anyone
with professional animal rescue, control, veterinarians, vet
techs - particularly those with water hazard training--would be
extremely welcome to come help search and rescue animals
from the hazardous flood conditions. Come to the Gonzales
shelter.
- NEW ORLEANS NATIVES. We need people familiar with the
backstreets of New Orleans to help navigate the backstreets of
the City. Come to the Gonzales shelter.
- OWNERS OF LARGE TRUCKS: We need people, preferably
with ‘official-looking" vehicles (flashing lights, the name of a
rescue agency painted on the side will help rescuers navigate
in the city) to help transport rescued animals out of New
Orleans to Gonzales. Come to the Gonzales shelter.
- BRING SOME SUPPLIES! Gonzales desperately needs the
following: water proof walkie talkies and flashlights, D batteries,
insect repellent, sunscreen, waders, animal medical supplies,
heavy duty gloves for handling wildlife, and containers full of
gasoline. Bring them to Gonzales! They are urgently required.
-POST STUFF. The US Postal Service is supplying Gonzales
again. Mail higher value, lower volume items to the shelter like
meds, etc.
-CALM DOWN DISTRESSED PETS. Our rescued dogs are
freaking out. If you can even just drop by for an afternoon with
some dog treats, chew-toys and "greenies" and pet a few
distressed pooches, and take some for a walk that would be a
tremendous help.
The Humane Society of Louisiana, St. Francis Animal Shelter
and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary are jointly operating a huge
emergency shelter at 115 Obed Magee Rd., Tylertown, MS
39667, where rescued animals are cared for in the longer term,
before being adopted.
-HELP US TRANSPORT animals from Gonzales to Tylertown.
Bring large vehicles suitable for animal transport to Gonzales.
The Tylertown Shelter has hundreds of animals but hardly any
volunteers to look after them. There is no electricity or running
water. There are no landline phones. We desperately need
helping hands. You cannot post supplies to Tylertown, as the
US postal service has not resumed in the area.
-LOOK AFTER RESCUED PETS. Come down to Tylertown, but
bring your own food, clothes, tents, medical supplies and
enough gasoline to drive here and back home. Think of this as
a camping expedition with a purpose. We do not have the
resources to support volunteers. People with experience of
caring for small mammals and exotics like spiders and birds
are especially welcome.
-BRING YOUR CONTRACTOR SKILLS. We are trying to erect
new portable buildings to house the vast number of animals
being moved to Tylertown. We need people with the skills and
tools to erect fences and buildings, wire up generators, etc.
-BRING BUILDING SUPPLIES, GENERATORS, GASOLINE etc.
Anyone who can supply portable building kits, fencing etc.,
please bring it to Tylertown.
-WE NEED AIR CONDITIONING. If you have AC units which
can run off generators and could bring them down help set
them up that would vastly improve the miserable hot conditions
for the distressed rescues.
-BRING SUPPLIES. At Tylertown we need walkie talkies,
flashlights, D batteries, insect repellent, sunscreen, animal
medical supplies, heavy duty gloves for handling wildlife, and
containers full of gasoline. The Humane Society of Louisiana"s
Executive Director, Jeff Dorson is at Tylertown and he can be
reached on his cell phone at 901-268-4432. However phone
reception is patchy in Tylertown and Jeff is very busy.
PLEASE NOTE: We are desperately short of people, so anyone
helping out must ensure that they can look after themselves,
and have enough gasoline to get back home.
PLEASE HELP US BY DONATING: The Humane Society
website is now back online at

I have two pound puppies, 16 & 13 yrs old, they're my stepdogs really,
but I'd bust my sorry a** to lug my 100 lbs of dogs to safety. No way
could I leave them.
Saw on CNN a rescue worker boating out to try and get some citizens to
evacuate, and as he motored along, a black lab came swimming up to
him, and the rescue guy said he couldn't pick the lab up. The begging
look in that dog's eyes just about killed me. The citizens refused to
evacuate anyway, so why not pick up the dog who obviously is smarter
and wants to be saved?!?

THANK YOU…...Sassyhair, Niftygirl, Elvira, Jkat118, Bryan,
ccross6032, Amm, Longhairdreams, Sherrie, Kateadreena,
Jenny, Ultraviolent and TanglesRC for all the support.
I just lost it when I saw that picture you posted Amm……it kills
me inside!! I can hardly bare to watch them pass by the animals
stuck on the steps and balancing on poles and tree branches
and these boats drive by and leave them. You feel so
helpless…..I am disgusted at the people who just left their
animals behind knowing they were warned about the expected
water levels. Many animals were electrocuted that were left in
the homes, one rescuer witnessed this himself. I would die for
my animals…. they are my children….would you leave your
child behind? NO!!
I am sooo scared for these animals….they have already went
up to10 days with no food and clean water. This water will
slowly kill them if they drink it and they will due to dehydration &
hunger.
They reported that animals were not being allowed on the
buses and people were just dropping the leashes and boarded
the buses without them while they wandered off. Did you see
where the blind women was told she could not take her guide
dog…. eventually they did. If they are fighting the people about
these special needs animals then there is no hope for the
regular pets to be included in the rescue. They are going to be
left behind to starve to death. I just can’t believe it. Some
people don’t look at animals like true animal lovers do and who
would fight to the death for their animals.
Thanks again girls for ALL the continued support!! Please post
these contact numbers, websites above where you can.
Everything helps......!!

reportedly approximatley 50,000 -- YES 50,000!!!! pets still
stranded by Hurricane Katrina in the affected areas!!!!
The HSUS.org has posted the DESPERATE PLEA for HELP!!
Unfortunately I cannot "paste" it here because craigslist.org
thinks I'm "slamming" and it won't let me have a similar post.
PLEASE visit www.hsus.org, go to the mid-right side where it
says "Press Room" and click on "HSUS Asks For Federal,
State, and Local Agency Help to Meet Animal Rescue Needs"
According to the information they have only been able to
rescue approximately 1,200 - 2,000 pets in BOTH Louisiana
AND Mississippi!!! That leaves around 48,000 still out there!
DESPERATE HELP IS NEED HELP PEOPLE!!!! PLEASE
MAKE PHONE CALLS!!!! This is the only way to be heard and
to get things done! Read the release info. HSUS is begging for
the Coast Guard, National Guard and the Navy for help in
gathering the stranded animals! They're not going to do this
unless we ASK them to! ALL of us!!!! Here are some of the
phone #'s you need to get started. Keep it simple & polite.

HOW TO DIRECTLY HELP THE KATRINA ANIMALS WITH
DONATIONS:
In this time of great tragedy, many of us want to know how we
might best help the animals with donations. Though I believe
that donating to any of the organizations involved will be
helpful, in talking with colleagues in both local and national
animal welfare organizations.
I've been told that making donations to the
following two organizations would result in direct and swift help
for the animals.
These are organizations are well equipped, experienced and
prepared to shelter and help large numbers of animals long
term if necessary and will work to return them to their owners.
They are the organizations that will be there for the long haul
for displaced animals after the national emergency and rescue
groups are gone, and will be handling the largest numbers of
animals. In visiting their web sites you will see other items in
need of donation.
Louisiana SPCA: A temporary shelter is set up in Gonzales,
Louisiana, at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center. Animal Control
Officers are computing back and forth, in both Animal Control
and refrigerated trucks, in an effort to save as many animals as
possible. The need is overwhelming. Quite a few of the LA/
SPCA employees have decided to stay in Gonzales, helping in
the rescue effort. Donations can be made by visiting their web
site:
http://www.la-spca.org/home.htm
Houston SPCA: www.spcahouston.org
The Houston SPCA has established an animal emergency
hotline (713) 802-0555 and is preparing to receive hundreds
more animal victims. They have already received more than
600 animal victims of Hurricane Katrina. They opened our
doors to 263 canines and felines from the Louisiana SPCA
before the storm hit and now we have accepted animals from
evacuees at the Houston Astrodome, Reliant Arena and
George R. Brown Convention Center. They anticipate
hundreds more in the coming days and weeks. Monetary
donations are most needed to help care for the hundreds of
extra animals in the shelter now and those we will
be taking in and caring for over the next several months.

SAS, thanks for posting this. I signed and send some money to the Louisiana SPCA and Noah's Wish.
My company has sent close to $40k in employee and company matching
contributions to the Red Cross, but they won't accept money from us
second-class citizens...excuse me, "contract employees." God
forbid they might have to match the extra couple thousand we might come
up with. Anyway, fewer people are supporting the animal rescue organizations, and I'm glad I
could help in a small way.
Yes...I agree with Leia. Thank you for this. I signed it and then forwarded it to my email list.
Besides the pets that were left behind I have been worried about the wild birds, rabbits and other small creatures. I hope there aren't any of the little pet kangaroo rats down there. I still worry about the ones that were rescued from my backyard last April.
I read a story about a woman that holed up in her house in New Orleans for days and the police finally made her leave. She was not allowed to take her two pet birds or her cat. So she left the birds out of their cage and let the cat go. I could not understand why the police would not let her take her animals.
Thanks again SAS

Thank You Leia & Thank you Karen for the support!!
Well, girls I booked my flight and today I’m flying to Baton
Rouge……I got this email yesterday……..I emailed Cathy in the
post I mentioned above and she answered very
quickly…..wellsc@legis.state.la.us
Yes, we NEED you. There is no place to stay so
bring a tent. You are NEEDED at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center
9039 St. Landry Road Gonzales, LA exit 177 off of I-10,
between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Thank you.
They URGENTLY need more volunteers-spread the word
everyone…this is where animal rescuers & animal care
volunteers are needed most, as this is one of the two main
shelters receiving the rescued, stray, injured pets from Katrina!!
Sunday was the first flight I could get. I am staying there for 2
weeks at the animal shelter…. bought my tent & sleeping bag
today!! Will be packing ALL night long!! My hubby is staying
home to care for all our animals as we have one special needs
kitty-that would be “Violet Lilly” in my avatar…my leukemia+
kitty. I will miss my own babies soooo much, the longest I have
ever went away before is 3 days but I told them that mama has
to help the other animals and will be back soon.
Pray I help as many animals as possible…I will be looking for
the birds and rabbits too Karen.
SAS, that is just awesome. I know you're leaving ASAP but if there's a care package you personally need or anything I can send when you're there, please don't hesitate to ask.
There was actually a TV report on how the animals WERE being rescued and then another channel showing the animals with their owners that would not leave without them. How, in such a civilized society where pets are wearing designer clothing by the stars, could this be happening? I'm not proud to be an American anymore. Our government is embarrasing.
Good for you SAS. I'm going with the Red Cross soon. But if not, I will come down to help with the animals (where my heart really is)
I did donate money also! I will make all the phone calls and call local news channels and mabey they can do something. I have a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach thinking about the animals and elderly abandoned.
