QuoteReplyTopic: Help!!!!! I hate my hair Posted: October 11 2005 at 1:08am
just incountered this tangling problem today. I wear sew in weaves and when I took it out and washed my hair I had huge tangles almost like dread locs I cut some of them I out. I was trying to get the rest out when I decided to check the board and c if any one else had this problem. I really need help with my hair it fell out in clumps when I was pregnant about a year ago because I got a relaxer it's starting to grow back but i don't know what to do to speed up the process I don't get relaxers any more which is hard for me b/c I have very thick hair n it grows really fast so I have a lot of kinky new growth. I used to love my hair and never covered it up now I wear weaves or braids b/c I'm so ashamed of it when people who know me c my real hair they r like what happened it used to be so healthy and long. please help.
I am relaxed so I may not be the best person to give you advice.
I would say try to avoid weaves as they are not the healthiest thing for the hair. I would try braid outs / bantu knots as that seems to be healthiest. You have to redo every few days (I suspect) and for that reason alone they are healthier for your hair and scalp. If you get braids, don't put them in too tight or keep in too long. Use a good moisturizing conditioner, avoid products that suffocate the hair (no mineral oil or petroleum products). May want to use a daily moisturizer..
I am sure others will chime in and give more specific recommendations. Definitely work with the ladies on this board and your hair will improve and become healthier. Takes time, patience and a good simple regimen with the right products.
Out of curiosity, which products do you use? What is your routine? Are you growing out the relaxer..

How do you take care of your hair when it is in a sew in weave and how long do you wear them? I never wore a sew in while natural but when I was relaxed I only wore it for about a week to a week and a half. Anyways, when you take the sew in out you have to detangle your hair...next time use conditioner and your fingers to get the larger tangles out. When you wet already tangled hair it makes the tangles tighten and harder to get out...I know this from experience of a sew in. So next time get conditioner and a wide tooth comb and your fingers and detangle like that before you wet or shampoo.

I used pantent relaxed and natural shampoo and contitioner I also use V05 hot oil treatment. and when I'm done blow drying I use jojoba oil. My hair feels like a brilo pad I'm thinking about puting a relaxer in to straighten out the new growth that's what my stylist said but i haven't had one in almost a year? what's the best one to use?
Ok, I would definitely try what Cmesweet advised if you get another sew-in. It makes sense and also she has experience with sew-in's herself.
Adding more chemicals to the mix doesn't necessarily mean that it will be any easier to comb or maintain your hair. Relaxed or natural, you need to use the right mix of products and a good consistent regimen to restore your hair's health. Also, it sounds like your hair is damaged and maybe could have product buildup (lots of cones in Pantene).
Other issues could be:
1. Your hair is relaxed and you have a considerable amount of new growth. Are you trying to stretch your relaxer or grow out a perm? Either way, the stress between the 2 textures can be difficult to manage and can lead to more breakage. Sometimes stretching is great but sometimes going too long creates more trouble.
2. When did you apply the hot oil (before or after shampoo / condish). This can make a big difference. I can not detangle after hot oil, always apply condish afterwards.
3. Maybe the products you are using are not the best for you? Every one is different, so maybe there are other products out there that may be more effective for you especially when detangling. What about Creme of Nature Shampoo? Also as I said before, Pantene works for some but has cones which can lead to buildup. You need to clarify if using their products or consider switching brands (look through older posts for lots of recommendations).
Since your hair is likely damaged, you may need to do the occasional protein treatment for added strength. One that the ladies on this board like is Aphogee. I personally like Emergencee (by Nexuss). You need a good Deep Conditioner after using either of these.
Hopefully others will have more advice. It sounds to me like your hair will recover but just needs TLC.

Ke-Ke I feel you on the instant dread locs tangles. I was in tears. However, I went out today and bought a clarifying shampoo, and a good conditoner (I hope). I will be washing my hair soon in hope of it not being tangled as all hell again.

I have tried cream of nature detangling shampoo and I liked it I switched to panten because the conditioner made my hair much softer and more managable. I was trying to grow out my perm. I don't know what to do. I do believe that my hair is damaged. Any ideas on what kinds of products I should use to restore it. I don't want to go to a salon b/c I know that they'll try to cut it and I don't want to do that

Ke-Ke there are many women here who have grown out their perms, I am one of them. Umm I grew it out for only a few months but others have transitioned alot longer. Also, there are posts here that can help you and all u have to do is a search on it on this forum. Also, I recommend www.nappturality.com it has product recommendations and a forum especially for those transitioning (growing out their perm) who u can share your concerns with and relate to. But stay here too we love helping each other.
Good for you that you are growing out the relaxer. I have thought about it but I'm too chicken
There are several people here on this board who have done it so you will have lots of support and good advice.
I would definitely try clarifying. If the conditioner worked in the past but is no longer effective, then this sounds like it is due to build-up. Clarifying may remedy this. Use a clarifying shampoo or an ACV rinse (again you can find an old thread on this board re ACV rinse I'm sure).
Also, as you transition, do regular protein treatments followed by a good deep conditioner & if you don't already have one, use some sort or daily moisturizer, especially on the new growth. There was a thread on this board not long ago about the best moisturizers, even home made ones.
Good luck. Keep posting.

I think that natural oils are the best in restoring hair because they are light and easily absorbed. In your case I would do a pre-conditioner with jojoba oil, shea butter, almond oil, coconut oil, glycerin, and aloe mix equal portions of those ingredients and put it on your dry hair for 20 min. under a dryer. Then shampoo and condition. Your hair will be really soft! I used Pantene and it coated my hair so I wouldn't recomend you using it; have you ever tried Motions CPR line their shampoo and conditioner is really good. Also my friend got me to start using Bumble and Bumble shampoo and conditioner and it really makes your hair soft and shiny.

To everyone that replied to this post I would just like to thank you for your advice it has worked wonders on my hair. Here's what I did I use Aphogees shampoo for damaged hair, followed by Apogee's Keratin recontruction to make hair softer and more managable. I then did a deep conditioning with luster cholesrerol, finally I put Fantasia's heat protactan on. All this combined has made my hair softer and easier to manage. It's not yet as soft as I would like it but I'm getting there.
This happened to me once after the interlock method. This is the method that has extensions sticking out of the cornrows. I think the tangling happened because I was did not get my hair clean enough while wearing the breads. I also did not time to comb out my hair before I wet it. I also left the breads in a really long time. Next time you take your weave out, use an oily oroduct like takedown or a detangler and fully detangle and comb before you wet the hair. Also, do not leave the weave in for too many months before you remove and redo it.
Hey Ke-ke, sorry to hear that you had to cut your hair OUCH!. Well first off while you had your weave did you take care of your hair underneath? And when you were taking out the weave and braids did you comb your hair with a large tooth detangling comb? If not then thats more likely why you had all the tangles because you HAVE to comb your hair out before washing otherwise you will have a matted mess (I know because my bestfriend and my cousin did it). Its good that you dont relax anymore but you have to take extra care of your hair while in any style. Keeping it conditioned and moisturized is the key. You can try using the Mango Butter by Elasta QP, Shea Butter leave in conditioner by Cantu, ORS Olive oil lotion just to name a few and for tangles Mane-n-Tail Detangling spray works wonders and I mean it works wonders LOL. Well I hope everything works out for you and keep us posted and odnt give up on your hair its just something you have to get use to, baby it, and understand it. HTH
