QuoteReplyTopic: what to do with my hair now? Posted: October 12 2005 at 5:16pm
hey yall im new here and i have a bit of a prob wit my hair...about a year ago i started putting a perm in, u know the curls?(not jherri curl, a dry curl or whatever its called)...things were going fine but in the humidity my hair was always always really dry whenever i went out and was always frizzy. anyway up until a month ago it was permed n last month i relaxed it straight even tho my stylist AND my mother told me not to but i was so fed up with the frizzy afro-looking perm it never looked curly n healthy at all! well big mistake that was! i didnt listen told my stylist to go ahead n relax it n now its breakin sumwhat on the side and especially in the back. now everyday i go to schoolw n the girls are tellin me my hair looks "patchy" and askin if i was bald.its hard to ignore it cuz i KNOW my hair looks bad and that i shouldve listened to what my stylist warned me against. now im seriously considering braiding my hair n letting it grow out.
would it be wise if i started braiding it for a couple mnths 4 it to grown out n when my hair grows back healthy again i can relax it again?what do yall think i should do?

wow so u have a perm and a relaxer at the same
time!,, i actually had a relaxer on top of a relaxer (full
head) when i was 15 BIG MISTAKE that those
morons did at the salon ,, anyway,, i do think braiding
is a good idea for you, u NEED to LET YOUR HAIR
ALONE for now except for deep conditioning,, no
more heat and sleeping in a silk or sating cap and
ur hair will improve....
Hair type: 3b some c?, fine strands, last relaxer sept 05, never again!!! current :ap length on sides,,nearly bsl in back, damn those old frazzled ends! I am hair OBSESSED

yeah thanks! actually i do have a satin cap that i put on everynight theres a really big difference in terms of breakage so it helped alot. i stop blowdrying and using heating appliances on my hair a long time ago so i def, think the braiding is best too, just to give my hair a break...but im kinda wondering if putting in braids is gonna make my hair shrink or anything cause i know this girl who had braids in 4 awhile and her hairline was receding or sumthin like that...are there any precautions i should take when braiding? i know like i shouldnt put them too tight but anything else i should b careful about?

If you don't mind for a little bit of your edges to be left out then you should leave it out. I know I have taken braids out on my edges from being paranoid and because they were too tight, but I usually wear them in low ponytails, buns or a big fat braid. But yeah, make sure that they aren't done too tight and still care for your hair while it is braided (washing the braids, braid spray, use infusium to strengthen the hair while it's in braids as well. Go to www.growafrolong.com and there is a whole regimen on how to take care of your braid extensions. HTH.

Wow, a perm and a relaxer....oh no. I don't know if you should get braids or not because your hair is probably very damaged, weak and prone to breakage right now. I definitely wouldn't put any more chemicals or heat on it! Have you ever thought of going natural? Try to trim some of those damaged dead ends off and do lots of deep conditioner treatments and protein treatments to help the breakage.
omg i just realized something ,, i think pokahantas
has a good point,, braids can cause micro tears and
damage to the hair,, and ur hair is already badly
damaged so im not sure the brading is a good idea,,
and yes they can cause receding so u might wanna
keep ur edges free....

well yeah my plan is to go natural, but i wanted to put the braids in to let my hair grow out cause i dont wanna leave it as it is with nothin to do with it, styling i mean...cause right about now theres nothin that i can really do to my hair besides combing it n leaving it down, its that short...so i was hoping that i could braid it to give me sum versatility in terms of styling cuz honestly, my hair can only slightly go in a ponytail right now and it's killing me! and i dont wanna leave it as it is growing out, cuz then when all my new growth comes back i wont be able to really comb it properly cuz of the length..u know what i mean? but i really really do wanna braid it but if it might break it up even more...hmmm
