Some of you may already know this, but for those who do not, I have alittle information for you on vitamins and supplements. I know alot of us have looked to supplements to try to quicken our hair growth, such as the hair, nails, formulas, biotin, niacin, etc. Although these may provide what we are not getting in our diet, they may not be as affective.

It has be proven the our bodies only absorb about 20-40% of vitamins in their pill form. Although we still get a dosage it is not as absorbable as it would be in it's true form. There are two types of vitamins:Fat soluble and water soluble. Fat soluble vitamins are A,E,D and K. (K is essential in blood clotting) Fat soluble vitamins are more toxic in high doses because they are stored up in our fat. Vit. A is the most toxic in high levels and can cause blindness. If you already have a good diet, this vitamin in supplement form is not necessary. Vit. D is fortified in milk but is made from the cholesterol underneath the skin during sun exposure. Watch out about intaking too much of these. (Vit. E is the less toxic of this group.)

The Water soluble vitamins are the B's and Vitamin C. These vitamins are not as toxic because they are broken down in water and flushed out if we intake too much. Of course this is the major group the help's with hair growth, but there are some drawbacks. If too much Vitamin B6 is taken, it can cause nerve damage. If you are a vegan or strict vegetarian, make sure you are getting a B12 supplement of some kind because it is only naturally found in animal products. Alot of women take a biotin supplements which is extremely safe, however, I bodies only need a pinch (Literally) of biotin to have the effects of it. It's very potent in small amounts. If you have every heard of niacin flush, it's the heat you feel after taking a supplement of niacin. I was told that this can also mean too much is being taken. The RDA for niacin is not very high and it is readily available in foods.

So what's my point? Supplements are good to a certain extent and if your doctore recommends them, by all means take them, but from a nutritional stand-point, you will have much greater results from a better diet. You will absorb a more effective, digestible form of the vitamin this way as well. Talk to a nutritionalist before taking and supplements so as not to overload you system or take in toxic amounts and if you unsure of an item listed in a supplement, ask a doctor before taking.

Also, make sure you are getting adequate calcium, zinc, and iron. These also help with regenerating cells in your body, including the hair. If you don't drink dairy milk like me for whatever reason, make sure to get it some other way such as soy milk (25% calcium), rice milk (the vanilla is good.), or another way. Calcium is in green foliage but there is a substance that binds it so it isn't as digestible this way. Our bones reach it's density at 30 years of age before it begins to loose it. If you are not intaking enough, your body will suck it from your bones to compensate. (there is also 2% in your blood that is crucial) I just wanted to give everyone some useful info that may help you throughout your life and hair-growing journey!! I hope this helped!

Hi collcoll. I don't think I've welcomed you to the forum! Anyway, I'm glad to here that your depression has subsided. Vitamin B influences the chemical called serotonin in our brain that affects our mood. It should increase your energy as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not hatin' against vitamins because I know I don't have the perfect diet and we do need them at some point, but if we can help it, we absorb it better from our food. I don't like egg plant and mushrooms and I don't try to eat them either!! But, you made a good point!
