My hair progess had been growing great in the last couple months (like in the summer) then I joined colorguard. and I must say its killing my hair. I mean I can deal with the sweat and all that. But its the hairspray and gel i have to use. Flyaways and my little curly hair around the edges are no no's. so almost every friday and saturday I've got that junk in my hair.

My hair is starting to break off now, and it seems that no amount of pampering is helping. I've had to cut about an inch and a half off my hair to help a little....does anyone know of anything I can do to help with the breakage?

Does your hairspray and gel have alcohol in it? Maybe you can get one without.
Type: 3c/4a Natural
Current Length: 6"

It might have alcohol in it, I think I'll have to look into that. But they like us all to use the same products... so im not sure how that will work....

Why do you all have to use the same products on your hair???? That's like saying you all need to use the same deoderant or toothpaste! lol

Back in school, one of my friends was in colorguard...let's just say, having to it slicked back and looking tight all the time was not kind to her hair. She ended up having it cut from below-shoulderlenght to above her ears.

Find a no-alcohol gel and hairspray...I honestly believe that will help stop the breakage you're experiencing.  Good luck!

I dont really know why they like us to use all the same products... I guess it goes back to the we are all uniform thing... no one is an individual in a performance. But who knows.

But I don't wanna cut my hair anymore.. In a span of like 2 months my hair has gone from a couple inches belowl BSL to a couple inches above....

Do you have any suggestions for a no alcohol gel and hairspray anyone?

I know Queen Helene has a few alcohol-free hair gels (you can find them at Sallys or another BSS).  Anyone else have any reccomendations?  We've got to save this gurl's hair!

what is your hairtype?

I can usually get my hair slicked back with a little water, mango butter, and setting lotion---tie on my scarf for like 10 mins and its sleek!

You could try using aloe vera gel.  I use the Fruit of the Earth kind.  It has no alcohol.  I also use Fantasia IC gel and it's my favorite.  I didn't notice any breakage and I used it everyday.  I would definitely leave the hairspray alone because you can get the same effects from a good gel and the hairspray is probably doing most of the damage.  There are some online sites that have all natural gels if you are interested.

What is colorgaurd?

I don't know about this suggestion...but during my exams at beauty college we had to have our hair scraped back and stuff. My aromatherapy teacher (who was also the school manager) told us to use a little bit of almond oil. It worked for me! Apparently one of our teachers used to use it in her hair every day to slick it back, it looked like she had used loads of gel and hairspray!

how should i explain colorguard...okay think hlaf time at Highshool/ college football games... colorguard is with the marching band but we are the people with the flags and rifles and sabers (swords)... but back to hair....

My hair is 3c/4a mostly. but i straighten around the roots a little so its easier to pull back. Oh ya I don't have a relaxer either. I will try leaving the hairspary alone and see how just gel works....

Thank you so much Girls!

I agree w/ what sista said.  I don't need to use gel/hairspray anymore.  Just some conditioner, a light oil and some Cantu Shea Butter and I am good to go.  How will they know if you don't use the same products as the rest of the girls?  How is their hair doing with all of the products that y'all use?
