What kind of straightening did you do? I am thinking of getting my hair
straightened (they call it rebonding here) with the thermal
reconditioning/japanese straightening thing. The hairdressers at the
center where I work said that I could have the extensions done on the
straightened hair with out any problems. But we will be using fusion
and the Great Lengths method. I will look up some more info and let you
know what I find out. Please post photos when youre done with your
friends hair!
I have used the CHI Transformation Straightening System for about 3 years now, with excellent results. However, I don't think this type of straightener, a thioglycolate based straightener was meant to be used on highly textured hair, such as the African American texture.
I have used this straighterner successfully on clients of mixed heritage, or clients with South American heritage.
Hey Metalgirl! Since you've used the CHI and are an exeprienced extensionist, i have a few questions for ya hehe..
Mostly that I have about 4 inches of virgin regrowth (I knew I was
going to get something done -whether drastically changing hair color or
straightening- so I stopped coloring my roots in May) So I know that
shouldn't be a problem. But I have about 3 inches of hair just below
the regrowth with one color process. The rest (about another 2 inches)
have about 5-6 color processes on them so I know they have GOT to go!
But do you think the 3 inches with the one color process will withstand
the straightening? I am of very mixed heritage. So I have really
strong, Japanese hair, but its somewhat fine-medium in texture, and
when it curls it goes into medium-large, ringlets. I currently use
either a semi-permanent or a temporary color to keep the rest of the
color even with my roots.
Also, I am planning on getting hair extensions after the straightening.
The reason I want the straightening is cuz I work 6days a week
representing a health and beauty center. So its important that I always
look polished, but maintaining my curls everyday is just such a hassle!
Also, I figured my curls would be quite hard to match with extensions,
so I am going to straighten my hair and get long, straight extensions.
probably Great Lengths. My plan is to get the straightening done,
then get a semi-permanent color done to even out my hair color. And
then about a week or ten days later, get the extensions. I have quite a
sensitive scalp, so I think it will have to have a break in between!
And my LAST question is ...hehe Gosh I am SOO sorry this is such a long
post! Is it OK to color hair after getting the straightening done? I
only want to lift it about 2-3 levels, from a level 2 to about a 4 or a
5.
Sorry for the long post! Thanks so much for your time!
I'm so sorry! I just got a little excited there!:) I don't know much
about hair extensions (just what I've learned from the lovely ladies on
the board) but there are loads of diff types of hair. It depends on
what you're looking for. But the women here rave about the hair on
Amm's site, www.shrinkies.net , Bliss hair is supposed to be good and
so is Nature girl.
You have hair that has is chemically treated to different degrees, depending on it's location on the hair shaft. (you roots are virgin, and then further down the shaft you have 1+ chemical treatment, right?)
Well, I know that my CHI Transformation system has 3 different solutions: for virgin hair, for color treated hair, and for heavy high lighted hair. When my clients have multiple things going on along the hair shaft, I just use the appropriate solution for that part of the hair shaft. For example, On your 3" on new growth, I'd use the solution for virgin hair. On the part of the hair that's had only 1 process on it, I might use the solution for color/chemically treated hair. And for hair that has been exposed to several processes, I'd use the solution for the high lighted / bleached hair.
If I was at all in doubt, I'd do a strand test first to see if your hair and withstand the process.
Definately give your hair a break in between straightening and extensions.
And yes, provided that your hair is still in good shape, you can use a tint to color your hair. It's wise to only lift it a few shades about your natural color.
As for Greath Lengths, they will probably tell you you can wear them for some outrageous time period like 6 months, because that's how they justify charging high prices for their non-reusable hair. DO NOT wear them (or any extension) longer than 12 weeks, it would be the kiss of death for your natural hair, especially on hair that's been chemically treated.
NEVER use a thioglycolate based straightener over hair that's been previously straightened with a sodium hydroxide based straightener. Chemically those two compounds are not compatible.
Sammybites-
Sorry to hijack the thread! The yaki texture may work well for your friend.
I purchased some Yaki ones recently in an Afro-Caribbean shop and my friend was with me. The sales girl commented on how nice her hair looked *cough cough* and couldn't believe how sleek it was *cough cough*. She recommended 'Yaki' extensions and they cost..get ready..an alarming £1.00. 'Shoite' I hear you shout. Yes, I did too. She assured me it was THE best and I toddled home gobsmacked but happy.
So I apply the extensions. After the first 2 I wonder why the glue is turning black. I realise it's because the glue is melting the extensions. So I attempt to straighten the extensions I've applied and they fry.
Suffice to say I removed the bonds and am back to the drawing board...
DId you end up with yaki synth? Cuase that's what it sounds
like. which isn't fundamentally bad but requires a slightly
different approach than with HH.
Several reputable online seller's have yaki HH.
Not that I can remember the names. yaki is just the
texture. so if it matched in texture you can just get human
yaki.
