How long?  Depends what kind of look you're going for whether you want it blunt cut or layered.

If your hair naturally has "stay power" ...meaning it will hold what you do to it, you can try to comb it straight when its wet, or once its longer, put it in a ponytail when its wet and let it dry that way, and it may stay straight. You can try a little gel in it too to help hold - not so much that you make your hair hard and can't comb it once its dry.  (Mine won't hold anything so that wouldn't work for me...if you have hair without stay power you may just have to flat iron it or have it straightened professionally).

Personally, I'd say grow it longer and leave it wavy.  It'd be easier, you'd have less damaged hair, and wavy hair looks great long on guys, especially in a cut that's slightly layered on the ends so it tapers.

This is longer, not so wavy, and blunt cut.

This is curlier, longer and tapered on the ends (if it were blunt cut straight across it would make sort of a thick straight line and look thicker on the ends, but it is layered near the ends to avoid that)

I'd just show the picture, that's easier for them to judge how to cut it than to tell them in words.  If these are not exactly what you want, search Google Image for more pictures.

Why don't you offer to pay his mom if she'll cut your hair the same way?

Well, I'm kind of going for the emo/scene hair style right now too. Its growing longer, but my mom hates how it looks when its growing, you know the sides are kind of curling and they look bad of what used to be my sideburns and sometimes the back kind of curls a little on the sides. I want this hair style or something like it:  My hair quite isn't long enough hair, I think a few more weeks perhaps. But yeah does anyone ahve any tips on maintaining your hair when it is growing this long? My sideburns you can't even clal sideburns anymore, they like curl and I don't know my mom is like trim it please and I'm like but I want to grow it out and shes like gahh. Thanks guys.

you need a ceramic straightener... I recommend a Chi... they are alittle pricey but are awesome and don't fry out your hair as much.. I now use alittle wax pre straightening then bio silk to make it soft after straightening and gives life back... then Regis slick whip for shine and styling... takes a lot of work for my hair to look nice unlike my brother who's hair just works because it's fine and straight... but it does the trick...

oh, yeah i've seen that straightener, my aunt uses it or has one haha. she used to be a hair stylist, but she lives in california and i'm no where near her at the moment, but i think she still gets discounts for her hair supplies, so i can ask her. i mean i have a 100 bucks to spend, but i was hoping to buy another pair of jeans or soemthing instead with my christmas money haha. but, you think that straightener will help me right now and with the hair i will have in like a month?

While I was growing mine out.. my hair went through a couple hairstyles... and I actually ended up doing something totally different then I first planned in the end... if your sideburns are long and curly you can straighten them.. you don't have to look bad while growing your hair out... if you are willing to play around with it while it's growing... and you might actually find a style that you like even more than what you set out for...
