Hello!

I just joined the group and just as i was off to bed, I thought of another question...

My hair seems to do really well jus to the point where it is brushing my shoulders... then it starts breaking off really bad and I end up trimming it to just above the shoulders or as high as mid-neck.  This vicious cycle just keeps happening...Anybody know the secret to getting your hair to grow past the shoulders?

Protective styles. When your hair brushes on your shoulders that friction causes it to break. You have to wear your hair up more until it's past that point. Also make sure you wear nice tops like silk instead of wool. Another good thing to try is the baggie method. I like using a shea butter/jojoba oil/aloe vera gel mixture when I do it.

I agree. Shoulder length is the most vunerable point when growing out your hair. The best solution to get past that and to avoid the breakage is to wear protective styles such as buns, ponytails, etc. Anything that keeps the hair from rubbing against your clothing. Also b sure to use good moisturizer and keep your hair covered while sleeping. ~hth~

Thanks for the good advice everyone...do you know what protective styles I can do everyday besides a bun or french twist?  Also what kind of bands do you use to secure your hair?  How many days of the week do you wear protective styles? (If you say everyday, I might start getting hair claustrophobia!) If you have your hair up everyday, how do you tame the flyaways without a gallon of oil or hair gel?  I really don't want to have to wash more than 1X per week...

Sorry so many questions, I guess this is what I get for not joining earlier...lol

I use scrunchies on my hair. I wear protective styles everyday. I embrace my flyaways . I just use my moisturizer on them but that only lasts for a little while.

Hi Tiajanice!

I am new to this board, but I have been growing for about 18 mths.  My hair has been long enough for a bun the past 6 mths.

If you visit dontspeakdefeat's fotki journal, she shows you how to make a nice baggie and covers it with a phony pony.

SistaSlick is THE HAIR GURU, and her journal shows how to make a donut bun out of socks.  The donut bun is my favorite and I have been wearing it as if it was going out of style for mths!

Remember not to wear your buns too tight because it causes breakage in the nape area.  Keep your ends moisturized and seal it in with a moisture.

The best way to maintain a flat and pretty bun, while stretching a relaxer is to: deep condition,
-detangle,
-add leave-in,
-add moisturizer,
-seal it all in with an oil and
-put it in a bun while wet, and
-tie your head with a silk scarf tightly (for at least 15-20)...I do it overnight sometimes.

Make sure the hair is flat, while wet, otherwise when it dries, it will not be flat.  I did this for 6 mths straight - and  I am still doing this - and my hair grew like a weed.

I have a list of great inspirational fotkis in my fotki (journal section).  Check out what those women have done to get past the shoulder hurdle.  I recently passed that hump and you will too.  Good luck.
