I need some serious advice and tips.  This is the situation...I currently have breakage all over my head.  The breakage was caused by many things including stress, using silicone products daily, and using the curling iron.  I just restarted taking vitamin supplements.  I wash my hair every other week and relax it every 2 months.

I want to grow my hair out and I would like some advice on how to do so.   1)What do I use as a daily moisturizer that won't weigh my hair down?  2)What should my wash regimen be step-by-step?  For example what reconstructor, shampoo, conditioner?  Do I use a reconstructor and conditioner every wash?  Do I comb hair when wet?  3)Are there and tips or tricks to get my extremely dry hair from breaking?

Basically I want to create a brand new regimen for my hair care.  Because I didn't have one in the past and my hair has REALLY suffered.  I would really really appreciate it if I could get advice on how to treat my hair. Thanks much!

hey girl,, i replied to ur other posting but i see u've
got more questions here,, I had awful chemical
damage years ago but my hair is in pretty good
shape now and has shaped up wonderfully just
since july using these hair boards,, I have begun
using a recon with every wash and following that up
with NTM mask for about an hour after,,, however i do
not recommend this unless u know ur hair can take
recons on weekly basis,, for some reason mine can
but i dont think that everyones can( i guess myhair
was just severely missing its protein) I use
Emergencee for 10 mins weekly with heat( Nexxus
says this can be used daily but I dont recommend
this) shampoo the emergencee is out with NTM
shampoo and then apply the NTM mask ,,alot of it
and leave for at leats an hour with warm heat,, and I
do not believe in combing or brushing when wet I
have no need to ,, all the tangles come out t when
the conditioner goes on but if u do have bad knots
then comb wih a wide tooth as CAREFULLY as u
can becuz hair is extremely vulnerable to damage
when wet becuz the hydrogen bonds are broken,,
hair is weaker andjust begging for damage,, try to
get tangles out just by adding conditioner and water,,
a con with great slip is Atone Botanicals Recon,, its
the slipperiest u'll find tho not effective as a recon at
least not for me,, hope that helps
Hair type: 3b some c?, fine strands, last relaxer sept 05, never again!!! current :ap length on sides,,nearly bsl in back, damn those old frazzled ends! I am hair OBSESSED

cookiesnkream
thanks so much for your replies!

I plan on using the Nexxus Reconstructor and the Neutrogena products as well.  Instead of the Phytho 9 is it a good idea to use  Neutrogena's Triple Moisture Silk Touch Leave-In Cream OR Triple Moisture Healing Shine Serum?  Do these contain any of those ingredients that coat your hair but don't allow moisture to penetrate?  Also I am constantly working out...will my sweat damage my hair if I don't wash every week?

I actually sometimes use NTM shine serum and its
not a very heavy silicone like Frizz Ease though
silicones are known to coat hair and not allow
moisture in,,I never found it truly moisturizing though
even tho i was a serum addict for years,,, i never
knew of anything else that could moisturize w/out
reverting my straight style but there are many things
out there,,,, as for the Silk touch leave in cream , i
have never used it and have seen very mixed reviews
on it ,, If u can afford it do try the Phyto 9 or
Hollywood Beauty carrot oil( in a small bottle and its
orange),, its contains safflower and a number of
other beneficial oils without bad ingredients(tho i
have not tried it myself) ,, I personally NEED
silicones to make my hair work and I use Fantasia
heat protector spray for heat protection and
moisture,, its the best stuff I have ever used for shine
withoyt any stickiness,,,, About the sweating,, Im not
positive about this but I dont believe sweat is any
good for the hair becuz its very salty and I once
read that it could break the hair right up the shaft if u
fail to wash it off,, i would reccomend washing more
often if u do sweat alot with a gentle shampoo(NTM
or an organic shampoo) or even Conditioner
washing,, and using a really good moisturizing leave
in...... Hope thats helpful

i'm natural- i had an area that broke off in July/august due to stress. i used rosemary oil diluted in sweet almond oil as a growth stimulant nitely. I spritzed my hair daily with a mixture of glycerin/water/liquid aloe vera/eo. I also added liquid aloe vera and glycerin to my conditioners that i use to do my daily co-washes. I am still doing these things with great success. I shampoo weekly with a moisturizing shampoo- some of my faves include Con(the one with the green writing and yellow cap), Multipurpose Liquid Castile Soap(www.thechemistrystore.com), SalonCare Shampoos and conditioners(sally's beauty supply) and Queen Helene mint Julep shampoo concentrate. I deep condition for 45-60 mins one day each week under a heated bonnet dryer( i usually use my dominican c.o.c.k.t.a.i.l of miss keys 10 en 1, rivas silicon mix and emergencia). Nitely i oil my scalp/hair with one of the following :a rosemary oil mixture, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, grapeseed oil, palm oilor coconut oil. Weekly i use a preshampoo/ends treatment of castor oil or jamaica black castor oil. i also take vitamins and drink lots of water.

For shedding i use Queen Helene garlic shampoo or Nutrine Garlic shampoo and i use Nutrine Garlic Conditioner.

When i need protein which stops breakage(i do this 2x a month now)- i add Jherri Rhedding's 100% natural protein conditioner to my dominican c.o.c.k.t.a.i.l .

Hope this helps.

Thank y'all SO MUCH for all the advice.  I am going to purchase the Hollywood carrot oil or the Phyto.  I 'll decide which one at the store.  Also I am going to be washing my hair every week along with the deep conditioners.

carameldiva
Where can I purchase the ingredients for the glycerin/water/liquid aloe vera/eo?  How much of each ingredient do you put in the mix? Also where do you buy all of your other oils (grapeseed, palm oil, etc.?

glycerin and liquid aloe vera(i purchased from www.camdengrey.com)

8oz btl= 5 oz water, 1 oz liquid aloe vera, 2 oz glycerin and 10-15 drops of eo

grapeseed oil- i purchased at my local safeway grocery store but i'm sure it can be found online.

palm oil(solid so it will have be melted down prior to usuage), sweet almond oil and coconut oil(also solid- have to melt prior to usuage), castor oil- www.thechemistrystore.com - i also got a great shampoo- multi-purpose liquid castille soap for here and they have a great conditioner concentrate-vitamin fortified hair conditioner.

Wow, cookie and carameldiva have given you some great tips!

Carameldiva's glycerin mixture is very effective for moisturizing and softening the hair.  It will help you a lot.  Also, if you want some more reviews on moisturizers just check out my "Moisturizing" thread.  I am hooked on Qhemet's Amla and Olive heave cream right now.....http://www.qhemetbiologics.com/conditioners.php.  It is very moisturizing and softening.  It is really helping to keep my ends strong.  I contribute this to the amla oil that is in it because amla oil strengthens hair and helps it grow.  I also used unrefined shea butter, extra virgin olive oil, and Oyin's Whipped Pudding...http://oyinhandmade.com/oyin/index.php?p=33

To help your breakage, definitely cut down on your heat use.  This will help a lot.  Try to find styles that require little to no heat so you can give your hair a rest.

I use reconstructor's every 2 weeks, some do them more often.  I use one from sally's called Ion, and also one called Nutress.  Make sure to follow these up with a moisturizing conditioner like the NTM mask that cookie recommended.  I haven't tried that yet, I normally use Lekair cholesterol plus or Dove Intense Moisture. HTH

Thank ALL of you for your information. Tongue Having all of this input has really helped me.  I'm getting a relaxer and a reconstructor on Friday.  Then I will be purchasing the products you all suggested.

How often do you guys wash your hair?  With relaxed hair I always did it every other week.  But reading these boards I notice people wash more often.  Will washing more often damage my hair?

When I flat iron my hair I usually wash every other week using Creme of Nature shampoo.  When I wear my hair natural I wash every week.  Washing more often shouldn't damage your hair, just don't apply heat too often.

i use olive oil daily on my hair and it gets washed and pressed once a week.  Try cutting out the heat, and maybe even taking a break from the chemicals.they could be doing a lot of damage
