"Growth" is what happens at the scalp. Hair grows anyway no matter what you do.
Straightening gets in the way of getting more length. Frequent straightening, especially daily, will cause a large amount of damage to the hair's ends. The hair usually breaks off at the ends, which is the first length loss. The second length loss is the trim to get rid of damage.
It doesn't matter whether a person sleeps on it or not.
