Hey Kidlets!

Longtime viewer, second time extension-er here. My friend from work and I are going to DIY our extensions. Here's what I've got going into it:

  • 400 Shrinkies (from Shrinkies.net, unlined)
  • 1 Shrinkie-wand (From YourHairShop.com/AKA Kristen, her prices are just cheaper! No offense AMM!)
  • Shrinkie looper brush
  • hair crocheting loop thing (to grab the strands... it's a wooden stick with a crocheting-like thing on the end of it that closes)
  • talk.hairboutique.com on the computer screen!
Do you guys recommend any past posts, websites, etc. to help us along during the install? Have I forgotten something?
If time travel were possible, everyone would keep going back to that one GREAT hair day!

Iwould definitely have more shrinkies on hand and I would also use a super looper which makes it go much faster, available on shrinkies.net.  Good luck and have fun!

What kind of hair did you get?

You'll need hair clips and a good pointy tipped comb....

Hair type: 1a/f/i

How about a manequin to practice on before you do the actual install? How about pretipping? Did you pretip any hair? If the shrinkies are unlined, what adhesive will you use? Don't forget remover-C-22 is great. A few mirrors, rat tail combs, scrunchies, lots of healthy snacks and H20 to keep you going and some good tunes. You'll have a blast.

You will need more shrinkies, and I wouldnt use the unlined ones, I would use premium extended length ones, they just hold much better.  The shorter ones (for me) slip to much.  Even if the stick hair has been glued together with fusion glue its still not enough hold for me with the unlined ones.

I second what Kalika says.  I don't think the unlined shrinkies hold well enough.  I've used AMM extended length shrinkies, and find them very similar to the 'professional' version that I am used to working with.

Oh most definitely.

You guys think she'll need more than 400 shrinkies? Woo. Or is this for 2 girls?

I've used amm's regular black coated shrinkies and those things hold with a kung fu grip on my slippery straight hair. Of course, I don't hang upside down on a pole and swing my hair around for 8 hours a night (love you, Kalika!) as much as I'd like to.

You definitely need a rat tail comb, a water mister to keep those wayward stray hairs in line, and lots of tight clips to keep things out of the way that don't need to be there. A good friend with great eyesight, 200 strands of hair, a hot purging tool and YOU ARE THERE!

Details details... the cliff's notes version!

  • 400 shrinkies for 2 girls (gulp! Maybe I should contact AMM...)
  • Yes, the hair is pre-tipped
  • silky remy hair, origin China (I'm mixed, and this hair looks closest to my own. The italian and russian hair I checked out was very nice, but too fine compared to my own, which is thicker.)
  • Length - 22", some are 20", as I am reusing some of mine from my last install (microlinks)

Got the shrinkies in. Do Shrinkies get loose over time? I did a test run with the shrinkies, and the seem to hold the hair in well, unlined. The shrinkies I got seem very flexible after I used heat to shrink them. Is there something I'm overlooking?

I recall seeing one tutorial on how to remove the shrinkies by breaking ti up with a pair of pliers. Will this work? Mine are not very rigid at all. But tight. Very tight indeed.

Oh yea, another note on the pre-tipping... Also a field excercise!

My first install, I pretipped with Liquid Gold, let it sure for 24 hrs, then dotted the top of each extension tip with liquid superglue gel.

THIS install, i'm pretipping with LG, letting it cure for day, then coating the tip with superglue. (OK My BF brought home a 12-pack of liquidy superglue. Same chemicals as the "gel" superglue, only without the gelling chemical.)

Hypothesis: With proper pre-tipping, non-adhesive shrinkies will not slip before the 4th week mark.

Test 1
Goal: Test unlined shrinkie with LG-only tipped hair.

Method: This hair was tipped 1.5 -2 cm with liquid gold, straight off the weft. one dot of liquid glue was added to the tip to make certain the hair doesn't break apart. This hair was then "shrinkie'd" onto another strand of hair.

Result: This hair fell teh f---- off.

Test 2
Goal: Test unlined shrinkie with LG+ superglue top coat tipped hair.

Method: This hair was tipped 1.5 -2 cm with liquid gold, straight off the weft. The tip of hair is then coated in superglue on top of the LG, added to the tip to make certain the hair doesn't break apart. This hair was then "shrinkie'd" onto another strand of hair. About 2 mm of hair peeks out of the top of the shrinkie prior to applying heat.

Result: This is sticking on really well. I'll take photos for you tomorrow.

If time travel were possible, everyone would keep going back to that one GREAT hair day!

The lined shrinkies will hold better then the unlined, always.

And no, you dont break up a shrinkie with pliers, thats fusion.  for shrinkie removal you heat it up and slide it out of your hair.

Thanks for the advice, guys! I've been mulling over the decision about re-doing my extensions with shrinkies vs. microlinks vs. wefts... I've decided to go un-lined shrinkie over the lined shrinkies because I'm an actress/model and there are all kinds fo things being done to my hair on fairly short notice. I gather, from the boards, that even though the unlined shrinkies may not have as much "staying power" over the long term, I'm only looking to keep these in for about 2 weeks.

I do think I'm going to get the lined shrinkies for my next install. I have next to nothing to do over the next summer, so I can keep the extensions in for a longer period of time. But, not over 8 weeks, because my hair grows out very curly, and I'd rather not have dreads to deal with after removing the lined shrinkies.

I went over to Sally Beauty during lunch and the lady there said I might consider using a bad of  their liquid Keratin glue with my unlined shrinkie, to keep them in longer. I've never heard of "liquid Keratin Glue", has anyone else? I'm going to install tonight, as I have a Mardi Gras Party to attend!
