I want to get extensions, and prefer to do them myself.  The hair salon I go to is charging $700+ for extensions, plus the cost of hair, and I just can't afford to do that...Anyway I saw extensions in my stylist's hair.  I could see the bond.  It is beige and I am assuming they are in with micro rings.

I like the sound of micro rings because it is a glueless method.  However shrinkies seem more secure, and I have read that micro rings can cut into your hair.  I want to know ------ what is the least damaging method -- shrinkies or micro rings?  Also, how hard is it to remove the glue from shrinkies?  I have taken very good care of my shoulder-length hair and definitely do not want it damaged!

I love shrinkies and I am very convinced when install properly, cared for properly AND removed properly, they do not cause damage.

That said, I am also really loving the new silicone inserted microrings.  I have about 12 clients wearing that method right now, it's very secure in the hair and upon removal, I am not seeing any damage.

You can get either product on www.shrinkies.net

Hi UFO,
I just wanted to say that, personally, I prefer the shrinkies over the micro rings. For whatever reason (probably due to an inexperience in installing extensions) I had a really hard time getting the microrings to stop peeking out of my hair. I haven't had that problem at all with any of the shrinkie installs I have done.

What was my point? Oh, right. I like shrinkies better than microrings.

i totally prefer micro rings over anything- its fast, and if placed properly they wont show! there is no heat and the removal is even faster then anything.

I agree with Tangles, the microring is the fastest strand application.  I'm starting to do more rings than shrinkies.

That is the beauty of it...the is no "best" way...there are many ways of installation that are great.  The key is to find the best way for you and for your particular client.  As many of us who do this for a living know, some clients even need a combo-method such as shrinkies in the back and smaller "micro" extensions around the temple area..

Personally, I have always preferred microlinks. I tried shrinkies once, I
usually melt 2 strands of pre-tipped hair together to make it thicker, and
for some reason that seems to leave excess glue, which makes getting
those shrinkies out literally a nightmare.

For professional, I would go with shrinkies, but for DIY, I think it's more
difficult (only because dealing with heat, and it's hard to do in the back,
microlinks you can just keep trying to take a stab at it without burning
your fingers!

I never saw any damage with microlinks, never had any major problems
really. I think they work really well.

Yes, I am completely biased

I would say maybe start with microlinks because of the simplicity of them,
and then try shrinkies once you get a little more practice, and decide what
works best for you
