help !! want to make shortish hair curly

as u can see from my name i have no clue 

hey everyone, i want to make the hair onthe top of my head a bit curly. I was thinking of perming the top but i wanted to try other things first.

I have no time to go to the salon to get it done so i was thinking of a home perm kit? but would it work on shortish hair say about 4cm or so?

i got my hair going back (on top) and am going to shorten it on the sides -   it has a slight natural kink and is fairly thick but i wanted to try somethign diff. oh by the way im a man lol hehe

so, what do you guys and gals suggest?

thats actually extemely  close to how i want it, maybe with a little more curl. but just tryign to give you an idea - so what do you reckon folks??
