Hey Johan! I haven`t had too much chemical stuff done with my hair except for a horrible bleach job aobut six months ago. I don`t know about perming or other dyes (altho they don`t seem too good for hair) but I can safely say that bleaching is a deathtrap! I had to get it done twice, cuz the first time my hair turned this awful, uneven orange color with a few parts of it more yellowish and almost white YUK! So they did it again, and it finally got to a nice light near-platinum color, but it absolutely destroyed my hair. THEN; it started to turn kinda greenish after about a week, so I had to use a toner, which wrecked it further. My hair was frizzy and dried out and so nasty that I had to cut a bunch of it off. I`m kinda liking it short, so I guess it all worked out, but that crappy bleach job (it was done professionally too- the whole thing wound up costing me like $70!) gave me lots of stress and despair. So I agree that chemical processes are BAAAAD!

Johan,
My Grandmother has been dying her hair for years (around 40 some years to be exact), and she has the most beautiful hair I have ever seen!

Although when she colors her hair it is much much different. She used to be a hairdresser and her whole profession revolved around hair care!

She also looks very young for her age.. geez, she alsmost looks younger than my dad!

She doesn`t have damaged hair by her color processing, unlike most people she looks at what is IN the hair color before she ever buys it, she knows to wait a period of time before she dyes it again too, and she knows what to use ON her hair to keep it from breaking or turning to jello. It really does look extremely healthy for how much she colors it.

So in that sense coloring and perming can damage your hair if you just don`t know what you`re doing, like me for instance...

I processed and processed being sick of every color I put in my hair and it nearly turned to mush.
My grandmother didn`t like that because she KNEW I wasn`t looking at this hair dye kits I was getting and she knows even if I did look at what was in them I wouldn`t know a thing about them! Semi perminant dyes can be bad for tyour hair because some contain a metal (especially loriel`s castings) but don`t seem to smell as bad as perminant.

My grandmother uses and has always used perminant hair color. Her hair is lovely and shiney just the same. :) She is a really gorgeous lady!

But you can`t tell your children to do things and not create their own decisions for themselves. You should love them unconditionally no matter what they decide to do with their hair. MY dad told me that allll the time and all I wanted to do is just not have to listen to him "blah blah blah" all the time. For the most part you may be right but I say, let them do it if they want to do it. Unnatural isn`t necessarily bad and it won`t kill you. All things are made up of molecules anyway. May not be natural produced but heck.. most things aren`t and people still have healthy hair without it.

Dear Liz Naz, Ingrid, and Kitty Brite,
All three of you women asked me intelligent questions concerning taking care of hair, so I will answer these questions the best I can, even though you must realize I am not a beauty or hair expert, I am only a guy going by my own experience and my own beliefs!
Liz Naz asked me if there really is that much of a difference between natural and chemical products for your hair. Natural products I know are better for the general environment concerning pollutants, since all of the water from our baths and showers go back into the rivers, lakes the environment, etc., so on that level I think natural products are better, also I have been told by people that I trust that these products are generally better for hair and skin. That doesn`t mean that other products are terrible or will destroy your hair, I don`t always use natural products, but if you can use them all the better for you and the environment. That is my belief! And all I know is that I am now over 40 yrs.old and I have healthy hair like someone 20 or 25. But I also lead a healthy life, I work hard, play sports, I am active, and I generally eat a healthy balanced diet, so that contributes to my overall health including my hair. Also there is genetics. I am not balding at all and don`t have any gray hair yet to speak of. That is genetic, that really has nothing to do with anything I do. Sometimes it is just genetic , that plays a part, although you can improve your health by making good decisions and leading a healthy lifestyle!
And no Liz Naz I have never used olive oil or avocado or anything like that on my hair, although I have met people who do that and they believe it helps. I wouldn`t know.
Ingrid mentioned how bleach wrecked her hair, and she had to cut off the damaged part. There was a famous lady who was a disco singer in the 1970s and 1980s, I can`t remember her name right now, but she was from America and had naturally dark brown hair, but she bleached it platinum for years, and she ruined it so bad that now it doesn`t grow at all, she has a permanent short crewcut. The hair just broke off. Now I adore short hair on beautiful women and she looks great in her short crop, but she doesn`t have an option to grow it longer because she destroyed her hair! Also how could bleaching be good for the your scalp or skin or the environment! It is incredibly harsh, and when I meet women with bleached hair, I don`t say anything to them, it is their hair, but usually it doesn`t even look good, you can usually see their dark roots as well. People should just wear their hair the color it is, that usually fits their complexion and looks the best anyway! As far as you having short hair now Ingrid, my wife wears her hair very short and looks adorable! I find that many women look better in short hair styles anyway, you can really see their feminine features, they look pretty and petite in short hair. But every woman has to decide for herself what length and style of hair is best for her(as guys do to, of course).
Kitty Brite, you mentioned that your grandmother is a hair expert ,colors her hair, has had perms, etc. and she is an older woman with great hair! Kitty, your grandmother is a beauty and hair expert obviously, so she knows how to use products, how much to use them, and which products to use. I am not a hair expert, I just go by my own experience. Also your grandmother probably has good genetics in regards to her hair, she can probably do stuff to her hair that maybe some women can`t!
And Kitty you mentioned I shouldn`t tell my teenage daughters what to do too much! I tell them stuff but they don`t listen to me that much anyway, after all I`m just a dumb man, what could I know about hair or anything that females are concerned with! I live with three females, my wife and two daughters(and the ultra-sound indicates that my wife is going to give birth to a baby girl in late Feburary, so it will be three daughters and a wife! Do you think women really listen to anything that men have to say, do you think they care about what I have to say?! I`m just pulling your skirt a little, I have a very good relationship with my wife and daughters, we have a pretty good time usually, and they know what I believe, and they take from it what they need to.And my wife is a good woman, and my daughters are pretty good girls, becoming good young women.

One last thing about hair care. I believe that it is not good to overuse products even natural products in regards to hair. Some people shampoo everyday or even twice a day, I usually shampoo every other day. I believe that your natural oils in your hair are good. I also believe in occasionally, over a period of time, to alternate hair products, in other words don`t use the same shampoo or conditioners for many years in a row, but change it up every year or every few months. I don`t know why I believe this, no one ever told me to do this, I just do it, and I don`t know if it helps or not, but it seems like it does. Just an idea I guess! And of course use a hair brush that you like so you don`t pull and yank your hair too much, but I don`t need to tell you ladies how to brush your hair, I am sure you know better than me. And of course wash your hair brush occaisionally, keep it clean!
Also; exercise, eat healthy, and it doesn`t hurt to take vitamins!
Thank you so much darling ladies for writing me, you seem like thoughtfull and beautiful young women. I enjoy reading what you have to write!
Much love!
Johan

Johan, sometimes us we ladies listen to men, but we have our own free will like everyone else :)

I wash my hair every day maybe that`s why my hair is so thin eh? I alrenate my shampoo every time I wash my hair though that means every day I do the switcheroo and my hair is very pretty.

My grandmother got the good genetics in hair, her hair is nothing like mine. It`s thick and wavy and it`s sooo pretty! She`s always putting curlers in it and everything. She looks so young! Oh my goodness! That whole side of my family looks young....

I unfortunately I have hair like my mother`s which is very thin, and also anemia runs in her side.. so my hair falls out ALOT! Though I must admit my mom doesn`t take very good care of her hair and when she blow drys she yanks on the brush like purposely plucking out her hair.. so far, my homemade oil treatments seem to be doing the trick and they`re improving my hair`s health.. I even see a difference in my nails. :) I am very happy!!!

Dear Kitty,
I am glad things are working out well for you!
I do wash my hair everyday Kitty, I take one or two showers every day, I just don`t SHAMPOO every day, I do that every other day!
Thanks for writing!
Love,
Johan

P.S. - Do women really listen to what men say sometimes! Gee that`s great to know! Maybe men aren`t totally stupid! I`m glad to know that!

Hi again Johan,

You are probably wondering why me, a bald woman with lifelong alopecia totalis, is writing into a long hair thread concerning natural products on hair, but I just had to make a couple of comments on the use of natural products and the situation with pollution and the environment.

Now that I am pregnant with my first child, I am even more aware of pollution and the environment. We all pollute, we drive cars that pollute, buy products from factories that pollute, all of us contribute to global warming, and contamination of air quality and water quality, we are all guilty of this, but it is not a joke. Childhood leukemia is increasing in industrial countries, skin cancer has increased, climatic change is occuring with potential dramatic and unknowable consequences, and yes thanks to modern medicine many people are living longer but the kind of world we are leaving our children and future generations could be worse than what we inherited ourselves.
We have the technology to make cleaner cars and industries, we do have avaliable healthier and cleaner everyday products, people, all of us, could be doing more in these areas; in our politics, and in our everyday lives!
When you start to have kids you think about this stuff more. I quit smoking, am not drinking during my pregnancy, and I am concerned with the increase in certain childhood cancers and diseases, so I am doing what I can to be good to myself, my baby and the environment!

Johan, I so much appreciate your concern as well, and I am sure you are a positive influence on your pregnant wife and daughters. These are not trivial issues, and you seem to have a sense of humour in explaining this stuff to people, it doesn`t sound like you harass your daughters but just point out facts to them, and you don`t sound fanatical about the environment, but reasonable,(after all you admit to not always using natural products but trying to use them when you can). You seem like a responsible husband and father, and you are a good influence on people that read this site.

And yes Johan, women do listen to men, we sometimes just pretend we don`t, can`t let you guys think you are too important! But it sounds like you listen to women to Johan, because women are very concerned with health issues, childrens health issues and the environment, after all we are the ones that nurture!

All of my love to you Johan, and the best to your family!

Kisses!
bald Linda

The reason your hair turned green is because there was clorine in your water or you were going swimming. That`s what happens to ALL blond hair if it`s in contact with clorine. Trust me..
and $70 is NOT much for going to get it done perfessionally.. mine ended up being about $100 some. I dyed my hair neon orange after that.

You would have REALLY benefited from some heavy duty conditioners which would have tammed it.

Sometimes you`ve just got to know what you`re doing before you get into the whole hair color thing.

I dig the *OLD* Pink Floyd quote. "The Nile Song" from either Relics or More. Cool!

I`ve used a pretty good selection of both natural and "unnatural" shampoos and conditioners. As far as my somewhat oily scalp is concerned, I like natural stuff better because it is not harsh and does not make my hair astringently clean as "unnatural" products do. I don`t like my hair to be squeaky clean because it is downright unmanageable. I do use them though, because the detergents in the "unnatural" products get the oils out when I do an oil treatment much better than the natural products.

Since I`ve decided to let my hair get really long (right now it`s almost past my butt) I`ve switched from harsher "unnatural" products to natural stuff because they are much gentler on my hair. I like Jason products.

I used to be a competitive swimmer for 12 years, and I must have used every single product in the grocery store to protect my hair from chlorine damage. To my astonishment, Pantene and Finesse did a much better job than Ultra Swim. Probably because of the silicones coating my hair, preventing the chlorine from penetrating the hair shaft. I maintain that the worst thing I ever did to my hair was swim competitively. For those 12 years, I did not know I had dark-medium golden brown hair. I thought I was a sandy blond, and most people who knew me then do not recognize me with my darker hair.

Hey Kittie Brite & Nicole-
Thanx for the advice...I don`t think I`m going to bleach my hair again. I`ve started to appreciate the natural light brown color it is. Still, it was sweet of you to help! :) :)
Love, Ingrid

Hey Johan-
Thanx to you for your encouragement about having short hair. I`ve gotten to like it since I cut it off, but it was kind of a big adjustment since I`m kinda obsessed with what my hair looks like... I was really nervous about the whole thing & I`m still getting used to it. Thanx again! Yur a sweetie!
Love, Ingrid :) :)

Dear Ingrid,
Thanks for writing! Ingrid, I appreciate the lovely ladies in many hairstyles of various lengths, but I especially like pretty short styles on women, to me it just shows their feminine features better, and with the right makeup and earrings, short haired looks on women can be sensational! I am so glad you now like your shorter style, and write again lovely young lady! You seem like a very nice person!
Love,
Johan
