I'm contemplating buying virgin extension hair from India that is either
very dark brown or black. I want to end up coloring some of the hair to a
Level 3 Dark Brown and some to a Level 4 Copper Gold Brown for
highlights. Will I simply have to bleach out the black and then put on my
colors, or will there be intermediary steps to get the hair to the colors I
want? Thanks in advance for any information about this.

No you dont have to bleach.I lifted my virgin indian hair with a box dye(to lazy to go to sally's).For what your doing highlift browns would work great.

If you decide to bleach, dont bleach past the red stage.Since thats the underlying pigment you need for the colors you want.If you bleach past that, then you'll have to add red back with a filler.this is why it would be much easier to use a highlift in this case.Good luck

Thanks so much for the reply. Although I've done my own hair color for
years, I've never had to lift color before. What I'm hearing you say is that,
if I already have the hair color products (those I use on my own hair) and
want to match those colors exactly, my best bet would be to bleach up to
red, then put my colors on? Or is there a better product to lighten the
black than bleach, when I'm going to be putting dark color back on the
hair again?

(I guess my underlying question--before I purchase this hair--is whether
what I'm trying to achieve is do-able for a moderately competent person
with some basic experience with hair color? I certainly will do test
swatches to be sure I've got the process right before treating my new
hair.)

I wouldnt reccomend bleach.Highilfts arent good if you are trying to lift more than 4 or more. But Highlifts would be the way to go for the colors you want.Sally's has products made specifically for virgin hair.

One is loreal preference mega browns. Then there's Feria X-tra lift colors(which are made for dark hair also). And then there's Loreal Hicolor .Hicolor is the best of those three.Plus like the others its made for dark hair.Specifically virgin.

I wouldnt bleach. That should be a last resort IMO.The highlift should be enough. But you sound like you've been around the haircolor block(lol) So I'm sure you'll strand test first.

And yes it can be done and fairly easy.My virgin hair lifted very well with box color, and amms hair seems to lift much easier than the hair I have.So It should go pretty smoothly.
