Hi everyone! I'm new

I've been looking through the topics and couldn't really find the answer to the specific question that I have, so I just wanted to ask here (sorry if it has already been answered!).

Okay, here's the deal...my natural color is dirty blonde. Well over the last couple of years, I went really blonde, then a dark brown to try to get close to my natural color again. Now, I have given my hair a break for a while and my roots are growing out with dirty blonde, but the rest of my hair has faded to a light brownish/red/orange color. So the other day I colored it with loreal's natural match in dirty/ashy blonde to try to match up my roots with the rest of my hair...and even though it was an ash color, it came out with a lot of  orange...

So my question is...to achieve my dirty blonde hair again..can I use a toner, or should I try to dye it again? I wasn't sure if toner is just used mainly for ligher blonde hair...or if it could be used on my darker blonde/brown hair. Thanks for taking the time to read all this! Any help would be great!

Hi:  Can you post a picture of your current haircolor?  To be really helpful, it would be best if we could see your haircolor in natural light.

With respect to toning down the orange color arising in your hair.  I would suggest a review of Claude's sticky post on haircoloring basics.  It sounds as if you need to apply a blue based color to counteract the orange color.  I would suggest going to a Sally's and using a Clairol or L'Oreal professional product.  These color bottles are marked with the base color so you'll definitely know (unlike over the counter box kits that don't clearly state the base color).  Using the Sally's stuff is just as easy as the box kits (you'll buy the color and the appropriate level of developer and mix it in equal parts.).

Review Claude's post -- it will help a great deal and then you'll be able to frame your specific questions from there.  Good luck!

Here's a picture, hopefully it will help.

That's the result of using the Natural Match...

I wish it would've came out a little closer

Thanks Again!

Don't just dye it again because it's likely your hair will go darker, as dye can't lighten dye.

If it was me, I'd use Jheri Redding's Colorfix Colour Remover to remove the permanent dye, because your hair is darker than you want it......now, if you've gone light blonde I assume you've bleached your hair in the past, so you'll end up with a orangey blonde colour after Colorfixing.  Then all you need to do is choose a dye a shade lighter than you want (as your hair will be a bit more porous) but you want an ash tone (a dye with a blue or violet base) to counter the orange.

Please test strand before you Colorfix and before you dye, it really helps avoid haircolouring mistakes.
