I'm 18 and I have very thick, straight, long (24 inches) hair. I used to dye it, but I haven't in about a year since I dyed it back to my natural color (dark chocolate brown). Well I decided I wanted a small change, just a deep red tint. So I used Loreal Color Gems (demi-permanent) in "Dark Red." After washing it out, I used Ion Color Protecting Shampoo, then Ion Color Sealing Treatment, and then Ion Color Protecting Conditioner. I love my color, but the problem is that now my hair looks and feels oily (it's normally on the dryer side). I thought that maybe it was the conditioner, so I switched over to Herbal Essences but it still feels oily! I know this is really weird, but I have no idea how this happened. I followed the directions for the dye exactly. Other than the oilyness, my hair seems perfectly healthy. I've heard of dye drying out hair, but never making it oily! Does anyone have any idea why this is???

Hi

I cannott imagine what would be causing this for sure but it sounds to me that maybe the conditioners that you are using are maybe not quite suited to your hair. Other than that, it may be that you are not rinsing properly or it could be that you are using too many products in your hair. Another theory that I have heard is that conditioners can have an adverse effect on hair which doesn't need it and can lay very heavily on the hair and make it appear greasy in this case.....I'm not sure how true this is.....its just what I've heard. Maybe someone else can offer you some advice. Good Luck.

maybe it is because you are a teenager and your hormones changed. Is your face at all oily too? It could just seem like the hairdye because it started about the same time. I'm almost 30,and in the past two years my skin/hair is oily for the first time in my life because of hormonal changes.
try using a clarifying shampoo,or like DulcieB suggested something more for oily hair and see if it makes a difference.
Otherwise you could see a dermatologist. But I have never heard of hair dye making anyone's hair oily before.

My daughter is 18, and and is having a similar problem.  She uses a variety of clarifying shampoos daily, only conditions the ends, and rinses thoroughly.  But minerals in well water, or chemicals in city water, seem to cling to her hair and leave a residue.  She also has several cowlicks, so the greasy strands bump out making a mess.
You could try a professional clarifying treatment; the results are lovely for a couple days.  But it also takes out color, and once you shampoo two or three times, the residue returns.  Her father has a similar issue, but it is not as noticable on his short hair.  The rest of the family suffers no ill effects.  He is of Mediterranean decent, and I'm wondering if this seemingly "porous" hair is genetic.  Perhaps you are also Greek or Italian?
Let's hope someone can give us some advice.
