QuoteReplyTopic: Itchy Scalp solution? Posted: May 08 2006 at 12:12am
It seems that I always have an itchy, flakey scalp. I am currently
using pantene pro-v (classic formula). However no matter what I use I
always have an itchy scalp. Head and shoulders just makes it ten times
worse, somehow. Can anybody reccomend something I can do to take care
of this? Perhaps a fairly cheap and easy to find shampoo? Just in
case you want to know, my hair is about chin length and I plan to grow
it longer.
If its that itchy, it could be two things. One is fungus or yeast
overgrowth, and in that case I'd try Nizoral, since its antifungal
ingredient is different from the one in head and shoulders, it may work
where the other failed. You may also have luck using a vinegar
rinse after you wash your hair. This helps readjust the scalp's
Ph. Use a tablespoon of vinegar per cup of water and pour it over your
head, don't rinse afterwards (the vinegar smell will evaporate as your
hair dries). If you do have fungus overgrowth on your scalp, an
adjustment to your diet may be in order - when bodies start to grow too
much yeast or fungus it often means the body's Ph has gone awry and
adding more vegetables and less meat and sugar to the diet often helps
(though it may take many months of this type of adjustment before you
see a change...adjusting body Ph takes awhile).
Or, you could just have very dry skin. If that's the case, try
not using concentrated shampoo. Get a small bottle and mix a
regular shampoo (not medicated ones) half and half with water.
Roll the bottle to mix it, don't shake it. Only make up a small
amount at a time, don't leave the dilute shampoo sitting around too
long. Shampoo comes very concentrated and often overdries the
scalp, so using it dilute will still make suds and get it clean, but
overdry it less.
If its really bad and the nizoral and vinegar or the shampoo dilution
don't help, see a doctor in case you have psoriasis or another
condition that needs medical treatment.

It's not really terribly itchy, but just seems to be persistent. It itches mildy on the order of 3 days a week and gets annoying if I ever skip taking a shower for a day. I'll try your diet reccomendations and the vinegar and perhaps the Nizoral if it persists. I don't know about the dry skin, but I will try diluting the shampoo anyways.
Thanks!

My scalp has problems with persistent itch and flaking, though I'm sure it's far worse than yours. I had to kinda get tough with mine, and am currently using Nizoral, T-gel, and T-sal in my shampoo rotation. There are store-brand generics of T-gel and T-sal, but I have yet to see generics of Nizoral (figures, since that's the most expensive one :-P ). I use them in rotation with cheap, nonmedicated shampoos (usually specifically for fine hair), and while my scalp probs aren't totally gone, they're a lot more under control now.
