Hi all, I need some good advice from all you experts out there, I have highlighted hair, and I think they used a tint and bleach, I’m dark naturally and the dark is showing through underneath my hair and the roots are bad, but, really want to go back to a light to mid brown all over, as its costing a fortune to keep it up and no longer can afford it.  I don’t want to start messing around with bleach at home so I thought I would go back to dark again, but how can I do this?  Will it go green, I will do a strand test but still so wary, and I can not afford to go to hairdressers, please help any info would be great as want to do it in next couple of days, its driving me mad!!!!  HELP

If your highlights are really light say yellowish you need a filler. You have to replace your natural undertones back in say a red filler than use a brown hairdye.

More than likely your hair (may) have a green muddy ashy cast if you use a ash brown without adding a red filler.

If your hair is naturaly dark brown use medium brown. If your naturaly light brown use light brown, just becareful though because your highlights may be pourous and it will suck up the hairdye like a sponge. So keep checking it .Don't go by the recommended time you don't want to go to dark.Medium brown once turned my hair BLACK!!   I left it on the recommend time and it was really dark!! I should've done a strand test.

Thanks so much for the info, my highlights are probably a very light to dark blonde, so not too light, sorry but what is a filler and which one do i buy if i need one, i'm in the uk?  I think i am going to go for mid brown to light brown and leave it on for a little while, i understand what your saying as i once done this years ago and bought a light brown, left it on for the time and it did go black, but thanks so much for the info it helps, fingers crossed... salazarWink

Hi , My advice to you would be to use a semi light brown to pre-pigment your hair , this is I think the US call fillers. You need to fill in the colour you are intending to go , if it is light brown , dark brown you need to apply a semi colour first to stain the hair , apply the semi colour dry completely, then apply a permanent colour all over with the same colour you used with a semi, develop for as long as it says on the box (permanent colour)
