Hello, again. Smile

I've been wondering, does tying your hair up tight when you sleep somehow retard hair growth?

I have to tie it up in a tight bun, or else it'll all fall out and get all dry and messed up when I wake up. :(

And, I've heard that hair growth takes place mostly at night, so... Would constricting the hair constrict growth, because it's all tied up?

Hmm...I'm not really sure about it restricting growth, but if it is tied too tight then it can stress your scalp and cause shedding/thinning. Maybe try a silk or satin pillowcase or a sleep cap to prevent dry and messed up hair.

I sleep with mine in a braid and it's grown about  3 inches since March including an inch I cut off two weeks ago.

How would your hair follicles know whaty style your hair is in? The only way that style would affect it is
1. If it's too tight and is yanking out hairs
2. The hair gets damaged (ie by hair toys or clothing)

Sleeping with your hair loose is generally more damagin.

The simple answer to your question is "no."  Hair grows, regardless of whether it's tied up (at night, or at any time) or left loose.  Now, what ways of wearing your hair at night otherwise minimize stress, that's a different matter. Smile
