6 months ago I died my hair back to it's natural black level 2. My hair pulls ALOT of red. I am trying to get to a level 5. My colorist came up with this formula which I love, but it still has a red undertone that I would like to cut out. Here is the formula:
1. Redken Fusions Double lights Ag with 40 volume peroxide for 45minutes(the first 15 under the dryer).
2. Shades Eq 8GN for 20 minutes to try to tone the red
But, there is still a red undertone. Can anyone suggest a specific product or formula that would cut the red undertone? I have heard that there is a liquid that is blue/purple that you can add to your formula, 5 drops per every ounce. Would this help cut the red? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
The product you've referenced is a color additive called "Unred," which is available at Sally's. I haven't used it personally, but I have used other products in that line with success. It should do the trick. I'd give it a try (strand testing first). Good luck!

Yes, that's the name of the product I was thinking of. I did some more reading on unred & it sounds like it makes the color darker. I know the product says 10 drops per ounce, but unred also makes the hair color come out darker.
Is there anyone out there that has used unred that can recommend the number of drops I should put into the formula that will cut the hint of red in my hair, but not alter the level of my color?
Like you, I also have a BIG problem with red undertones. A hairstylist taught me a little trick, although I don't know if it works because I haven't had the chance to try it. The trick is:
With a platinum hairdye, usually a number 10 or 11, apply only the dye that comes in the tube (do not use the developer) to your hair; as if you were applying conditioner to each strand. The hair strand should be wet, and all you should do is massage your strands with the dye (remember, not mixed with the developer), and supposedly the red tones should tone down.
I plan on trying that trick as soon as I get a formulation down. Right now I'm thinking something like, Redken Fusion in 4AG and 6AG, mixed in a 1:1 ratio to reach a 5AG with a 20 volume developer. My natural haircolor is a number 4. I'm still looking at other options and doing a lot of research because I have yet to find a hairdye that will truly give me the results I want. But before anything, I suggest you do strand tests. Let me know if it works out, I too am trying to find a solution for my hair problem so any tips are more than welcome. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your suggestions. So just to clarify, after you've done your color, then you apply the platinum hairdye, minus the developer? Should you wait a few days before trying this? How long should you leave the hairdye on? Will this change the color of your hair, or will it just tone the red out? Do you know what the rationale is behind this beauty secret? Did your hairstylist recommend a certain brand? Sorry for all of the follow up questions, but if this trick works it will end years of living with red tinged hair color! Please let me know what results you get by trying this.
I would definitely try the Redken Fusion Double Lights if I were you. Sounds like you're a perfect candidate. It is specifically designed for gals with natural level 1-5, to cut the red/orange/brassiness. Since the ag is the coolest formulation to counter the red in our hair, I'd try that. It actually did much better on my hair than normal redken dye. Only a hint of red, as opposed to the obnoxious red/orange I usually get. I'm a natural level 2, trying to get to a level 5/6. That's why I need to use the 40 vol. Unfortunately because I have strong red undertone AND I'm trying to lift 3/4 levels, I pull ALOT of red. Since you're a level 4 & you're only trying to go up one level, the double lights w/10 vol. should do the trick without having to tone, etc. Normally you'd probably use 20 vol, but since the Double Lights is intended for use w/darker levels, the 10 vol should do the trick.
