QuoteReplyTopic: Frequent washings vs. gels and hot rollers Posted: November 14 2002 at 3:23pm
I recently had my hair evened out on the ends, and the good news is that I have ultra thick ends! They`re wonderfully healthy, and I`m trying desperately to keep them that way.
But I have a question to which I can`t quite find an acceptable answer. Which is the better of the two "evils" -- 1) washing the hair more frequently (either daily or every other day) but not using any hair dryers or other implements or,
2) washing the hair less frequently (let`s say once every three or maybe even four days) and allowing it to dry naturally but use a gel and hot rollers on it?
If I use nothing on my hair, it just goes flat within a day or two. If I use gel and hot rollers, I can go longer.
But I`m not quite sure which would be better on the overall health of my hair!
I`d greatly appreciate any comments or suggestions.
Thanks,
Jennifer

Well, that is a tough one. But I found that hair stays more healthy when less is done to it, or at least my hair. You should just let it dry naturally, and wash whenever you feel that it needs to be cleaned. I have Afro hair, and I wash when needed (once a week). After that, I put my gel or whatver in it and scrunch it till its curly, and I keep it like that for the entire week, although I do wet the curls every now and then to pump them up. My hair (with the help of vitamins) is growing like nuts, and it isn`t splitting because I am staying away from heat, until every now and then when I want to flat iron or blow-dry it.
To sum it up, just stay away from heat. That`s the best thing you can do to maintain those healthy ends, unless you get your hair cut frequently. I hope this helps. :)

Water is good for hair, and my hair loves water. I don`t think the water from the washing will affect your hair. It`s the shampoo that could cause a problem, depending on what the ingredients are. My roommate is Caucasian and she washes her hair everyday, uses heat everyday, dyes it at least once a month (permanent), and her hair still looks healthy. She uses a Thermasilk something, and she said that she uses this V05 hot oil treatment that heats its own self up on your hair. After using that, she said her hair feels like brand new.
Heat is worse. Use bottled water (has no hair damaging chlorine) and use a shampoo with only natural ingredients like Aveda or Aubrey - make sure the ingredients don`t list any sd alcohol or proplyene glycol(main ingredient in antifreeze fluid for cars) that stuff really kills hair. You would be surprised at how many ingredients in typical hair products are put in to make the product come out thick and smooth from the bottle, and may make you hair look good for the moment, but then after time they ruin it. This is another topic tho! Sorry so long. Take care .
